Zombie Prince fans are the enemy of truth.

Ok, this is a long rant, so pay attention--especially, you nose pickers at the back of the class.

Prince is a regular human being--sorry to pop thought bubbles, but someone had to say it. Prince is no better or worse than the man on the street. The zombie fans need to know this to be cured. He is not a God, but a flawed, yet talented fool.

I'm getting tired of the excuses for his weak new music. His fans are delusional if they think he is the same song writer they fell in love with.

Let me hold your hand and tell you all the honest skinny: NEWS is not innovative, it is not great, it is merely wallpaper smooth jazz, with some decent playing. Listen to Miles Davis or Coltrane and tell me NEWS is even close.

TRC is crap. Don't turn away, don't whine. The truth is the truth. There are no new ideas, or new themes on that album. The playing is nice, but could have been much better. Where is the danger? Where is the subversive melodic sense? You all know that religion makes bad music. Listen to The Love Below--tell me Prince is even in the same league now.

Listen to Everlasting Now, compare it to Starfish And Coffee, or Computer Blue, or When You Were Mine or many others. And still tell me this stacks up as greatness? Be honest with your ears. The weirdness alone on Computer Blue alone beats anything on TRC.

Listen to Scarlett Pussy--a throwaway b--side. A masterpiece compared to Family Name. Scarlett Pussy is subversive and funny and innovative. Family Name is preachy and heavy handed. The groove is robotic.

Come to grips my peeps--I love you with all my heart, but come towards the light, like the good moths that you are. See the flame, taste it. Truth never burns, it satisfies.

I know, I'm toast now. lol,.

While i agree with some of the points you've made (in particular religion making bad music), i don't see what you get to gain from a post like this.

Would it make you feel better if everyone put their hands in the air and said:
"You know what 2Freaky, you're right. Prince's music is shit now." ?

Everyone has a different view. That's how it is. Deal with it.
"London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"

"YEAH!!!"

"Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

I agree with all you said. Yeah, the man used to compose GREAT music and lyrics, but not anymore. Sad...

Anxiety

You know, I don't have a problem with Prince's music. Do I put TRC on the same shelf with the classic 80s stuff? No. But I will admit that I enjoy live recordings of TRC stuff and dig the versions of "Everlasting Now" and "Family Name" that appear on ONA Live and the Alladin DVD. Over the past couple of months I've finally started to really appreciate the mid-to-late '90s output, and in the past few weeks I've even been digging on NEWS.

I might have some really big differences with a lot of things Prince-related, but until he starts coming out with outright over-the-top sexist, homophobic, racist lyrics and equally offensive methods of instrumentalization, I don't have a problem with the music he makes. I have my preferences, but my mind's open to it all.

I have to say, I think you are missing out on the whole point of being a Prince fan. While I agree that TRC is not the highlight of my collection, I feel that Prince's music has evolved hugely since the days of Scarlet Pussy et al. I think that we have to accept that. One of the things that I respect most about Prince is that he has aged with us. I think that if he was still pumping out music for the masses I would have drifted away a long time ago. He is not trying to win over the 15 year-olds anymore. I'm in my thirties now and all though I like to 'shake my m-fin do loose' every now and then, I have mellowed. I never thought that I would enjoy sitting back and listening to a jazz album (albeit fairly funky jazz) as much as I do with NEWS.

So basically the lesson is to stop living in the past. Evolve. Is that the dawn I can see...

So you must have fell off the wagon 20+ years ago. From The Lord's Prayer on, themes of Christianity have been sprinkled throughout Prince's catalog.

I love these "everything I like is superior to all the shit you like" threads. Whiner.

Do they have to be over-the-top? some would say he mildly touched a couple of those subjects on TRC.

I think as a whole the orgers on this site are very knowledgeable fans of music in general. So I don't think the maturity or sophistication of the audience is an issue. I simply think a lot of longtime fans don't really like the direction he's going in right now, similar to the way jazz fans reacted when Miles went electric. A lot of us would like for him to make a sparse, raw, urgent "Prince" record like he used to back in his 80's heyday. But those days have come and gone.

I think his sound is jazzier, earthier, and "warmer" than it used to be, and that's a really good thing. But lyrically and thematically, Prince has become more insular and a little more difficult to "get." That's frustrating to the old heads, but we have to accept it and appreciate the great stuff he's already made.

The Org: Love it or Leave it?

Now how does that sound?

IMO, we need a variety of viewpoints in this forum to make it interesting. I think it's good for fans of Prince's earlier work to hear the opinions of other fans of his newer work, and vice versa.

Ohmygod, Intraweb, I LOVE IT!!!

I don't think most people would put me in the Zombie category...but in all honesty, I think TRC and ONA (piano) are the best albums he's released in a looong time...and while of COURSE I ain't sayin' that they're better than anything from the Classic Prince-Couldn't-Do-Wrong period, I sure as hell think they're better than almost anything released in the 90's.
