What was she thinking???

Why did Leann Rimes cover "Purple Rain"? A co-worker just had it pop up on her web radio, and called me over to hear it. It's REALLY, REALLY bad. Hmmm...

In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

When are people gonna realise it's not all about the money! As an artist, be it songwriter, painter, musician, author etc you put a piece of your soul into your art and it belongs to you. If you wsh to share it with others then you go to a record company, publisher etc. A record company or publisher or whatever should then get the right to distribute it and that is all! It is the record companies greed that makes them want to own the masters etc. And if you decide you want to make a living out of your art then you get paid for it. If you are really good then you get paid a lot. Pure and simple. Legally WB may have the right to give the song to Leanne Rhimes or whomever but ethically and morally it is wrong without the original astists permission.

wink I understand that, Sweety. Truly. But if your songs are your "children", can u really control their fate? Our children come THROUGH us, not from us.

I didn't compare them to children. But using the analogy, of children, until a child reaches leagal age be it 18 or 21 or whatever you have a say in where and what they do. You have a child and someone takes it away from you, what right does that person have to raise them? Still not a good analogy to use though. Children are a tangible thing that you can touch. Your soul can't be felt or taken in the same way.

I know u didn't, but Prince has called them his children. I think it's very suitable. It doesn't take 18 years to raise a song. When it is completed, it is completed, and ready to face the world. And then, like it or not, the world will do with it what it sees fit. Again, for me, it comes down to a spiritual issue -- there is only one Creator, and we are all vessels, it comes THROUGH us, not FROM us. While I don't care for Leann's version, I don't object to the idea that she has the right to do it.
