Did Prince break his ankle in 2001? Did anybody attend the Hit & Run show where Prince supposedly broke his ankle? Is this even true?
i heard this is why he isn't as energetic on stage as he once (Doctors orders: No more dancing!) I read it somewhere on the net (not here!)

I read it somewhere on the net (not here!) yeah iheard he had to cancel some shows for fucking his ankle ligaments up. i dont know if he did the rest of the hit n run tour doing splits though? either way, he still spins around abit on the ONA DVD which suggests that they are ok to some extent! dont know if doing the splits would look very cool playing jazz in a double brested suit mind!

I cant remember which year it was now, but when Prince, Chaka Khan and Larry Graham did a special show at the Trump Marina in Atlantic City, both him and Chaka Khan both slipped and fell on the stage and Prince went around for some time with a cane after that!!
The main reason was a faulty ice machine!!

Seeing him again recently in Hawaii l, I def. took notice of a lack of any real dancing...Sure, he's still funky but he's not tearing the house up with jumps and splits as he did just a few years ago...I believe that something serious must have happened 2 stop the man from letting go...I know when I'm dancing and I'm totally in2 the groove---nothing can stop me from doing one of my famous "Prince splits." That's always been one of my own signature moves esp.since most of these young jacks don't know how 2 dance...His music is just 2 funky not to really dance to unless you're physically restrained...Aloha~

BY the time of The Celebration in June, 2001, Prince admitted to having hurt his ankle. He claimed, if I recall correctly, at the soundcheck of the first night in St Paul that Kip Blackshire had kicked him! Certainly he was using a cane when he walked, and he took a buggy ride from the mixing desk to the stage. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift. |

At 45 I'm sure I won't be able to Do the splits, mind you I never could.

I don't think he actually broke his ankle during that tour, but it was reported that summer that he hurt his ankle. Thus the mid-tour cancellation of some of the Hit-N-Run shows. [This message was edited Tue Jan 13 12:49:02 PST 2004 by Universaluv]

Prince sprained his ankle when he tripped over a stage prop near one of the ramps. This occurred during the New York show, IIRC, of the New Power Soul Festival (featuring Larry Graham and Chaka Khan). An ankle sprain results in stretching of ligaments and joint problems in the ankle.

At the Trump Marina in Atlantic City. First Chaka fell straigh to the floor the band stop'd she got up and she said keep playing - mentioned she had a lot of padding! Prince slipped also that night and the rest of the dates after that were cancelled. After Prince slipped and twisted around he finished the song and it looked like he was going to be leaving, he actually came back and finished of the show with a few more songs but the pain on his face was evident after the slip.
The Marina ball room was small and the NPG was trying to get the entire set up in there, a fire marshall made the crew move around some speakers making it congested. A fog machine run and started to make the floor slippery! Looking back it would have been great if Prince bumped his head a bit to get rid of that damn Larry G.! Everyone was hoping for something special that night and Prince slipped and cut the show a bit short from what everyone at least thought! Ohh well. I remember they gave out tour books and remember all the hot shot high rollers that tried to budge the line at the Marina! People were going to kick some ass! I didn't get it, it was all assigned seats anyways! Funny thing about all this, an old lady was waiting in line, budged in front of me and a few others, after 30 min she turns to me and asks "Is this the line for the buffet?" It was like damn no you better get some earplugs momma.

Give the man a break. He isn't Superman! At 45, I'm sure that I'll still be able to do them if I could at 40...and what about James Brown?? Prince is in excellent health (it seems) except for the ankle/leg thing...And like it's mentioned,Prince was still doing plenty of splits a show just a few years ago...The man got hurt...Being 45, has nothing to do with it...But that's just my observation...Aloha~

I noticed at the Cleveland show that he always walked down the ramps (on the sides of the stage) backwards. Maybe it caused less strain on his ankle?

wow. so he sprained his ankle and cancelled the rest of the dates. poor little boy. jesus christ, as someone training to be a professional dancer, you know that real dedicated people can't pull that shit. of course he didn't have to finish the show, but that don't mean cancel the rest of the tour. i guess he ain't used to ANY discomfort these days. i wouldn't doubt it if he complained that the air conditioning hurt his aura or something. jeez. you make my titties itch.

What Really Happened...
True, it was in Atlantic City that a stagehand had placed a monitor in the wrong place...and when Prince was dancing around w/ the fog all around, he stepped over the mis-positioned monitor and sprained his ankle. He had a sense of humor about it in interviews immediately following (well, at least about firing the person who'd placed it there). He cancelled the L.A. show at the last minute and Concord (the next sched. concert) was also up in the air. I attended that night. An announcer came on at showtime and announced that Prince was in pain but was willing to come on if that's what everyone wanted. He gave everyone a choice: He'd perform and do his best w/ his hurt ankle or cancel and come back when it had healed. Of course, the crowd would rather see him NOW, so he came on. He made comments like, "Limping and all, Im'a still kick your ass tonight!" while he hobbled around w/ his cane. I remember wincing a few times cuz altho' it was obvious he was in pain (minimal movement) he still ran up and down his piano seat a few times, trying to put on a show. Of course, while I think everyone was happy the show went on, it was a disappointing hour-long show. I felt bad since I'd taken a very fine woman to her first Prince concert and was talking shit beforehand, telling her stories about his energy onstage and that she wouldn't be disappointed. DAMN!! (Sorry, Prince) So...yeah, that's what I remember happening. Oct. '98??
