The War/WWWBP?

For some reason, I've been spending a lot of time listening to both 'The War' and 'When Will We Be Paid?' recently. (Probably because they're both on the same compilation I've made). I love 'em!

3 questions:

1. What are your thoughts on these tracks?

2. Why doesn't anyone ever mention Prince's guitarsolo on WWWBP? It's phenomenal!

3. For those who were there, or just know these things, how much of 'The War' was recorded live (as opposed to using samples) and which band members were involved?

Whenever I hear somebody say that the unreleased High album sucks the first thing that comes to mind is WWWBP - wait - because this is such a fantastic track! I've never thought about the solo in particular though.

One other song I'd forgotten to include is 'When Eye Lay My Hands On U'.

You're absolutely right! Short but sweet. The flip side to WWWBP, U Make my Sun shine, is also a gem.

All three fantastic tracks. It was a good sign of Prince going in the right direction again, to me.

I have always loved The War, and find it be the longer, funky, darker brother of Rainbow CHildren. Though the latter is lighter, jazzy, and much shorter, it has lots of things in common (the guitar solos in particular, the overall atmosphere, the coda, ...)

I wish Prince hadn't rediscovered the whammy bar. He's been stinking up solos with it for the past few years. His style with it adds nothing, rather it only detracts from what are otherwise beautiful solos. WWWBP is a perfect example of that.

The War, on the other hand, is a perfect example of his weirdness run amok. I love the guitar solo, but enduring such a long ramble to get to it just isn't worth it...
