Larry Graham High all,
Last nite I was watching rave un2 the year 2000 cause the nite b4 i had watched live at the aladdin, and i needed 2 watch sumthing from prince again so, at the time rave seemed like a good idea. Anyway, me and my slightly younger than me brother were watching this, he wanted to because he's steadily realising he's a prince fan since he watched the Aladdin DVD, and we started and i was thinking, damn, i didn't think this was that good when i last saw it (i'd just finished she's always in my hair), and it progressed and I realised why, as did my brother. Now, it was what my brother said that made me realise something. Larry Graham is the son of satan. We'd got 2 "The Christ" the dismal corruption of the cross , and Larry started singing, and my bro, who had never seen Prince live b4 save the Aladdin DVD, let alone heard most of p's music, said to me really innocently, "Ben, who's that black guy ruining all of prince's songs?" I couldn't believe it, my brother, who had never heard prince b4 save the Aladdin DVD, nor had seen him b4 knew, knew that Larry Graham was not meant 2 b, and asked me why he was ruining it - I think that says something about the effect Larry had on Prince and his music. edit: 4got 2 give this thread a point: Don't u think it's amazing that someone who's not a fan can realise that Larry ruined many prince songs, and do u agree? I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Well, I don't think that larry ruined Prince's music persé but prince leaves him to much room so that you see a duet causing the music to be catapulted back to the stone-age of GCS and Sly Stone. Now; don't get me wron; I like sly, GCS, rufus etc; but it's not prince. It breaths a different atmosphere and has not the same edge.
Larry and Sly were preaching love and happiness over the smell of patjouli. Prince, on the contrary, was singing about giving head, masturbation, DMSR, Sign of the times and having strange relationships in a killer yellow suit and high heels. Even when "wihing you heaven" he had a unusual sensuality and boldness. I dislike the Graham-person as he fooled another perfectly gifted person to believe the JW stuff. You'd figure that anyone over 30 should see through that bullshit in no time. Instead, during regular concerts, we get waves and waves off pseudo-intellectual-goodie-goodie peace crap over our heads. If you want to put some philosophy in your scatalogical material; make sure it's fit for the times. The HQ-er formerly known as krokostimpy.

You can't blame Larry Graham for screwing up Prince's music and more than you can blame Tony M. Prince was the one in control and he wanted to go in those directions with the help of the other person.

You've got a point, maybe his influence on the Kid's albums was Prince's wishes, but I hate the comments he slips in live, and the random banter - it's just really irritating and it's that that ruins prince's songs.

I remember an interview in Notorious magazine back in '99 that described Prince's relationship with Larry. The interviewer observed that when it came to spiritual things, Larry took the lead. When it came to music, Prince was always in charge. They'd be jamming on guitar and bass one minute, and Prince would say "let's play piano duets". Without a word, Larry would give his bass to the tech and sit down to play whatever Prince wanted to play.

I heard all the complaints: that his eyebrows are so big fans are afraid they will be crushed by them! The white suit! The sense of humor LG has: sometimes real silly, like during soundcheck in DC when he kept saying someone on the airplane to DC was saying "I know who you are! Famous Amos!" and Larry kept repeating that like it was real real funny, I thought Prince was getting annoyed with him and we were all hoping Prince would turn to him and say "Your fucking fired!! I'm returning to MPLS to record the black album part 2 and I'm going to release it on Xmas! Get your shit outta your house I'm calling demolisha!!" Prince just stood there and Larry kept talking about "famous amos" and continuing on with his terrible annoying laugh. Someday that punk will feel the purple rath mark my words! In this case, a very nice song was raped with silly JW/religious txt, losing all subtil meanings. It just became a preaching song instead of a song on dealing with the hardships of life aswel as dealing with religion aspects. Maybe it'sjust because he changed a perfectly good song under the influence of his JW beliefs, and by doing this, made the growing importance of religion, and most defenitly JW, painfully clear to the fans. Many of his fans may have a strong spiritual side, but are not religious. With this change prince took a very visible step towards religion. This Larry bashing is sooo old...Do we have anything else to talk about?? Does it make you or I look any better for putting him down?? He is a very Positive individual..
With all the Negativity that surrounds us, what makes people just want to talk about this man over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again? Why put Prince or Larry down over their Spirituality? What the Important question WE should all ask is--- What Does God Think about US? Are we doing what we should be doing to please Him? What does God Really require from us? So while every other week there is a new topic about Larry this and that and why is Prince not doing this, just remember to look in the mirror ..because who are we to judge? You never know they may be on the right road after all..they may have the last laugh. ~~~God's Word is Powerful~~~ Actions speak louder than words. He obviously felt so strong about it that it was enough to make him change it. Why is this silly? Why was the cross not seen as silly? The song still has the same meaning and feel. He was and still is saying to follow the perfect example ofthe Christ.

Yes, I agree that many a times Larry is annoying while being in Prince's camp, but for whatever reason Prince wants him around, deal with it. True that. No doubt Prince really looks up to Larry. I think Larry is genuine. I would not take away from his ability as a bass player, he is great and all. Prince also declined before Larry was on the scene. Turned into this old fart that blamed MTV, Radio, and Record Co's for bad sales etc.. He should get off his ass and record some shit that people freak with. Settled on his live show and the music club he is doing fine but to go platinum would be work and I just do not see him getting the ball rollin in all courts at once radio, tour, video, appearances..etc..etc. Ain't gonna happen cause he is old and content with all he has, can't blame him. Still if you want to shake it up you got to try to get out there and give them hell. Not the young man wanting it all anymore. Most people here would say I'll take the jazz shit blah blah blah. I'd take the young man hunting for hits and taking over! but thats me. I guess we have the good old days. Larry is not to blame for the no drive. You know the old I signed the contract pitty me and my fancy smanshy house, my sports car..blah blah. P"Don't complain about fame!!! Cause someone took it from U!"

He obviously felt so strong about it that it was enough to make him change it. Why is this silly? Why was the cross not seen as silly? The song still has the same meaning and feel. He was and still is saying to follow the perfect example ofthe Christ. I don't think the meaning is still the same. Baring a cross, or baring the Christ seems totally different to me. Plus as you said it yourself: he changed it, because he obviously felt strong enough to change it. Prince made it very clear that he changed the title because he believes that the story of Jesus dying on a cross is "A LIE"( as he claimed offended in concert). Then he changes the title and the meaning of the song, because it's no longer about baring a cross (which is a saying) but about believing in Christ and not in Jesus dying on a cross and forcing his fans to listen to that change of belief. By doing that he changes all the perceptions his fans had of this song and makes it clear that the song will never be the same again, leaving the past the past and the fans with a feeling of: "WT... ??". So, no the meaning of the song is not the same anymore. end of rant. -- [This message was edited Wed Dec 24 0:48:01 PST 2003 by Abrazo] You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.
