Baby Knows on TOTP with THEBLUEANGEL! How is it that I've never seen this performance until right now? (Top of the Pops from '99, I believe right before the Rave concert was filmed) Princey, you may not celebrate Christmas, but you just gave me a big ol' present anyway. Thanks, sport.
His voice is so raw and POWERFUL on this...what's up with that? It just kinda hit me. I've always DETESTED this song and now I can tell I'm gonna have to add it to the rotation when I spin that disc. I'd MUCH rather listen to this version though, with the AMAZING guitar solo on the best goddamn guitar that ever existed. It was a guitar sound we haven't heard from him in a while...and I guess it just kinda hit me in the face, and I'm gonna go watch it again, and if I wanna play with myself while doing that, I will goddamn it. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Sorry to break it to you but that isn't the "Blue Angel"... The "Blue Angel" had a beautiful pastel blue kind of colour... This is just the Electric Blue version that he's been playing since 1993... Neversin. O(+>NIИ<+)O

I quite like that performance. There can't be many acts that have appeared on Top of the Pops doing improv live guitar solos - most just don't have the skill or confidence to do anything other than exactly like on the record.

Most of them are lip-synching, and hence don't have the freedom to do so... They don't like 'live'-acts at TOTP, because it often is a load of work to get everything right. Doing a studio-cut gives them the freedom to draw from various takes of the exact same song.

Not true - until recently, the executive producer of the show (Chris Cowey) encouraged acts 2 perform live as apposed 2 lip-synching and saw Prince's appearances as a big coup 4 TOTP at the time. Now we have Andi Peters at the helm - God help us. Blue - I LOVE 'Baby Knows' - its such a great little tune, it may not have been a major hit if released, but certainly didnt make any sense that he went around promoting that, TGRES and Pretty Man, and TGRES sunk without a trace. I was lucky enough 2 get in 2 the recording of His performance on the 'Millennium Tube' back in 1999 in Newcastle - was great! (Ironically, this performance He played guitar live and sang live, but the rest of the band and vox was a back up tape - also mimed 2 TGRES - go figure!) Still, was nice 2 see Him and the band run thru it a few times, and inbetween takes He was quite chatty with the assembled fans. Good times. Personally i prefered the version he did on 'TFI Friday'. He looked better and played better. He also forgets the lyrics during the performance! "London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"
"YEAH!!!" "Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

He does? When? I know I've seen him flub up the lyrics to this song before, but I don't remember him doing it on this one. 'Nana, I love yer fucking bad ass. Thanks for the steamy story to warm my cold, um...feet. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Also, I can imagine Chris Cowey to want certain acts to play live.

Am currently wondering with MJ (rumoured at least) 2 be in the UK on a 'promotional' visit 2 push 'Number Ones' whether he'll appear on the show. I know it wont happen, because it's all a ruse.

It seems with the (UK) Top of the Pops that every new producer swings the show from one extreme to the next - one has all the acts miming, then another one comes in and insists everyone plays live, then another one comes in and back to mime, and so on. It's obvious TOTP can do live when it wants to - it should just be upto the artist and TOTP facilitate them. Jools Holland's show is the REAL music show on tv but an appearance on that doesn't really get you noticed.

I was lucky enough to be at the Tube performance, the TOTP performance, and the TFI Friday performance.
The TFI performance was by far the best, in some way because it was good to hear him swear again, and he did "Pretty Man" after the show had gone off air. After those shows, quite a few friends asked me when "Baby Knows" would be coming out as a single, they loved it. Another great Prince Marketing Move. Promote a song you are not releasing as a single... .

Ya know, when I saw this performance, it put the song in a totaly different light. I love this clip, it does jam, I have to thank my friend Phil for bringing this to light for me. I totaly agree with this post, except for the playing with my self thing. I was gonna post the same thing about a week ago, thanks again Phil.

ABSO-frikkin-lutely on all counts bud - TFI was the best performance, but have 2 say - living in Newcastle as I was at the time doing my college course, and having the chance 2 see Prince perform 2 about 100+ people was fucking surreal. When I left the studio that afternoon and was walking back thru the city centre, I wanted 2 tell every stranger I came across what Id just experienced and who Id just been in the prescence of - was well wierd!
