With the exception of "Strollin'" and "Insatiable", this album pretty much sucked, IMO.

prince was better...

The general public would eat Rhino dropping if they came
in nice wrappers and were backed by a million $ campaign
on television.

Doesn't mean it's good for your health though.

Diamonds & Pearls would have made an excellent 8 song
Prince album. As is, it sounds dated, tired and far,
far over-reached.

what album after it sold more? this still allowed prince to show his musical range. He dabbled in a ffew of them
on this album. it satisfied alot of areas, he had hits,(gett off, cream, diamonds and pearls, money dont matter 2nite") all of these were kind of poppy excpet for gett off which was probably the funkiest song of the year. the album made money, it was popular and he stayed true to himself. its a fun album to listen to as well. nothing since then has sounded as fun..I havent listened to NEWS so I cant really comment on that. the music has turned dark since then.

I don't really think it's that special. Pretty good at best imo.

The songs don't have the lasting power of his other work.

I loved D&P when it came out,and it even grew on me more over time. Solid songs back-to-back-to-back-to-back to start out the CD and more along the way. The Arsenio Hall performances reawakened me to its strength.
Funkycomic, you make a good argument for this being the last greatest album when it comes to popularity. I don't know the sales figures but seems it had more singles on it than others.
Excellent CD, IMHO

It sold about 6.5m worldwide.

Still a pretty fine album to my ears.

D&P was a promotional tool w/ only a handful of memorable songs. Thunder was so overproduced, the keyboard layered on way too thick it's almost embarrasing. Prince is at his best when he rely's on simplicity.

I listen to the album allot as well. I never tire of gett off!!! its a solid solid album. 6.5 million copies is
a very good total. I cannot think of a song on the album that I dont like. Blackwell the arsenio hallshow was a great!!! The mtv performance of GETT OFF was incredible as well. for those that dont agree, what is it about the album that you dont like?

There's too much on there that i don't like.I can't call D&P great, it's a mediocre Prince album at best.

Still i love Insatiable, Thunder, Gett Off and Willing and able. That's about it, occasionally i won't skip tracks though.

What I don't like about the album:

Thunder: silly, bombastic lyrics.

Diamonds and Pearls: lyrics are a bit twee

Jughead: I think it's all been said

Push: the rapping sounds contrived

Live 4 Love: Prince telling a story from the viewpoint of a fighter pilot singing in a falsetto voice from his cockpit - doesn't quite work for me.

Overall, I find the writing a little contrived, polished and ultimately shallow. That's partly because it sounds as if he's trying to write an album which will be a pop hit, covering all bases to satisfy the masses, rather than trying to write where his muse is taking him, and damn the consequences. Just my thoughts.
ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Diamonds and Pearls had some classics. However, was the
prince album was the better of those two. The Gold Experience, Rainbow Children, and even Emancipation blow Diamonds and PEarls away. I'd rather hear Prince rap than Tony anyday.

I think its a good album but not a great one. It's a mixed bag really. On the plus side:Rosie heart ,
but...then there's Tony M.He's not really as bad as people make out but he's not all that either. The band is great tho.

I love Thunder and Daddy Pop cause' they're fun - Thunder has this great guitar bit in it...Cream and Gett Off are great. The rest I barely listen to. Jughead is shit. Not necessarily because of Tony M, but because it's proper bollocks as a song.

I'm sorry, but imo D&P is utter shite, I don't like a thing about it.
Being a fan from the mid 80's, this is the album that finally got me to stop collecting prince stuff. To this day I buy the albums, go to the shows and that's really it ... no Xeno candles, no calendars no special edition remix singles or anything ... hell, I don't even own 1999 the new master. If D&P has one redeeming feature, I just now told you about it:)
