I've heard it before:

"The radio sucks today,Prince shouldn't lower himself, he doesn't need a top 40 song,etc."

However, if Prince had a new Top 40 song (just one) it would introduce him to a whole mess of new fans. These new fans would inevitably check out his back catalog, get hooked and his fan base would massively expand. Then, all of the things we are hoping for(Re-issued/Re-mastered albums, DVD video releases,etc.)would come to be. They would come to be because there would be money to be made and that is a huge motivator in the music "business".

I think Prince could easily do it.I happen to believe that Prince hasn't had a hit song in 10 years because he hasn't had a record deal(blame Rave on the ousting of Clive Davis) and the record companies own the radio stations.Anyway what do you think?

Most of the radio stations are owned by Clear Channel, with whom he is touring. Perhaps he should extend his deal with them to include radio promotion as well as tour promotion. Would that be selling out? Would it be worth it, just because he can?

I admit I miss him and all of us being a part of the commercial media...I rmemeber th e buzz back on Act II tour here in California when he had to postpone a concert because he was ill (and the riots?) and it was reported by a few dj's etc...I miss us (us meaning the audience) being a part of music society etc...

The only radio Prince needs is NewPowerRadio.

There's no doubt in my mind Prince could record a funky pop hit that'd make the top 40, but I guess Prince just doesn't want that level of exposure anymore.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that he's done it all and feels like he has nothing left to prove, I really don't know, but it's too bad that a guy so capable of making a commercial comeback doesn't feel motivated to even try.

I don't want him back in the spotlight because I care about it personally, but just because the music scene is so putrid today, at least Prince would bring some quality to it.

Seems a bit cynical. I think that for the most part the pop radio crowd is drawn in by image but I think that as people mature it becomes more about the quality of the music. And you know what? Prince is very aware of the power of the image/visuals and how it can compliment the music.

I'm all 4 hearing a new Prince song on the radio, and even seeing a new video on MTV. The problem is, the majority of radio listeners are 2 young 2 appreciate the legend that Prince is. They see him as some old guy who is so 80's instead of someone they can relate 2, like a Britney or a Justin or anyone like that.
When I was a teenager in the 80's, I could care less if someone like Aretha Franklin or Elton John put out a record because they were older and just not the same as they were in the 60's or 70's. It's the same way now with those who are young.
I'm not saying Prince shouldn't try to get back in the mainstream. Who knows - maybe he'll pull off one last big hit like Cher did in '99. Or maybe he'll pull off a big comeback like Santana a few years ago. But at the same time, we shouldn't set up ourselves 4 disappointment.

Think about this:

When Prince began his career, he was very underground. He went all the way to the top of the world... the highest possible peak of fame and fortune. Now he seems to have slowly gone back to the underground. Is all of this by choice?

Im tired of the underground..cant we have a 2 year spurt of media glitz and glam again?

The bottom line is that in order for Prince to truly be popular again and re-gain a Madonna like status in terms of popularity, he would have to totally submit to the will of the major record labels again and I simply don't see that happening... nor would I want it to.

Prince used to be a hot shit.. now he's only shit when it comes to hits. He can blame it on everyone in the whole world but fact is he can't dent top 10 anymore and hasn't been able to for a long long long time.

When an artist releases a hit song.. she/he has to play ball, cooperate, sacrifice and work at making the song a hit.

Prince doesn't know how to play ball or cooperate with interests outside of his own. Therefore, Prince can release fart after fart of good music.. but nobody is ever going to hear it aside from those who have a nose kept stuck up his ass.

A hit-song/video today would be like trying to teach an old dog a new trick. Ain't gonna happen.
