Back in the 1980s various members of the Revolution introduced him to all sorts of classic albums and genres, people like Miles Davis,Duke Ellington,Beatles,Led Zeppelin,Al Green etc etc.Its where he got the inspiration to branch out and create wonderful albums like Parade,ATWIAD etc.

While touring PP during the celebration tour I noticed a large stack of cd's in his recording studio and not very surprisingly he had GCS, Sly, Stevie, James, Chaka, Hendrix, and all his other influences. I didn't really see much new music besides an Ani cd.

Nobody has to introduce a musician to ubiquitous bands like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles.

There's every chance they were chosen to be found like that. I'm not suggesting that they're not his favourite discs but Prince doesn't let anything be known without his choosing.

He collects his own back catalogue and he's always on the lookout for a good bootleg or two.

Anxiety

I've never thought of Prince as much of a musicologist. I've never read an interview with him where he's mentioned some album or group he's into and thought "oh wow, wonder what that's all about, I'll have to check that out..." I love reading interviews w/ my favorite musicians to get that kind of info, but it's never really paid off with Prince - usually it's like, "oh no he did NOT just call Celine Dion funky."

It's not particularly common for him to mention another artist's work specifically - Joni Mitchell's 'Hissing Of Summer Lawns' is an obvious exception that comes to mind.

That said his work by way of covers, references in other forms (the last tour book was full of 'NPG playlist' recommendations - probably from across the whole band, I suspect) and samples, suggests he has a back catalogue collection or listens back to a lot of music over the past 30-40 years.

Ok,"introduced" was a bad choice of word, but you know what I meant ,The Revolution did expand Prince's musical tastes , read a book or 2 on him before jumping down peoples throats e.g DMSR page 163 "Lisa ,Wendy and Susannah were important in turning Prince onto the Beatles,Led zeppelin and other rock groups of the 60s and 70s"
Don't assume stuff about Prince ,he said himself in a Rolling Stone interview that he'd never heard Bob Dylan's work,he'd only heard Hendrix's version of "All along the watchtower",maybe you lot wanna assume he was hearing every kind of music under the sun,I'd rather base my opinions on facts.
I dunno, maybe Per Nilssen' thoroughly-researched books on Prince were all baloney, maybe not, maybe certain prince.orgers think they know it all...

And you hold your knowledge with something written in a book eh? Yeah u said introduced, and regardless if you think that or DMSR said that its still stupid to think they "introduced" prince to a pleathera of other music he had "never" heard of in lilly white MN at that time..please! Especially Beatles, Stones, or Led Zep as u mentioned..gawd..If you know YOURE history you would know most of MN radio rarely played any soul or rnb so of course Prince was engulfed in rock music and other...see all of his back catalogue for influences of rock, rnb, funk, etc...all "introduced" by th e "world" to Prince..not "the revolution". Lawd.

*sigh* I took back the word "introduced" ,if the only way you can try and prove me wrong is by rewording my arguments it makes for a pretty pointless debate.I'll stand by my argument, based as it is on a passage from an oft-praised book on Prince , you stand by yours, based on whatever opinions you felt like having today.

Chill out, dude. A lot of artists overlook the big names and then find out later exactly why these people have the big names they have.

Especially with Prince, I think once upon a time he prided himself on listening to underground stuff.

Also, its easy for people to dismiss the Beatles as bubblegum fluff pop artists (I once did), but theyre certainly not.

I discovered Hendrix and the Beatles through Prince, but not because he mentioned it...usually because music analysts love to mention these people along with Prince.

I've heard him mention Joni a lot, but I haven't gotten around to her music yet.

Helikes the Stones too, but I've never heard him come outright and say a word about the Beatles.

I'd say he's a Chuck Berry fan too.

Nobody said that none of Prince's band members
hipped him to some music during their years together.
It's common in any band that the members hip each
other to what they may not be aware of. I'm sure
that Prince has thrown in some influences into
some of his bandmember's repertoires to add
something new to their palates too. But to
insinuate that they had to expose him to certain
styles in order for him to be cognizant of
music not stereotypically associated with him

is a stretch. Since his sophmore album it was
obvious this freak's music wasn't limited. It's
not like he was the horse who had to be led to the
water and made to drink by others in order to
realize that so-and-so's music exists.

Adult musicians are usually curious about other
styles in general, especially when part of their
musical education is curriculum in their
everyday schooling. Even if they don't exhibit
it in their work.

Someone with Prince's parentage
(both jazz performers), regional surroundings
(Minneapolis does not have a large Black population
- I'm sure the Beatles and Zeppelin
could easily be found on radio stations there),
and natural inquisitiveness of a creator is most
likely not going to be so incurious and helpless
when it comes to various music styles so as to be
one-dimensional, as some people want to paint
him without the vaunted saviors within the Revolution.
I've even heard (read) a couple of people here
who say that it was Eric Leeds who "introduced
Prince to jazz." That's a slap in the face to
John and Mattie. I'm sure Prince's parents would
dispute that if they were still among the living.

Some seem to hold this view that since Prince
was never hugely vocal in the press about what
he was listening to, and his influences, that
his musical worldview was very limited.
Prince was never hugely vocal about ANYTHING
in the press in those days.

That's too much of an assumption. He was obviously
bs'ing when he used to downplay Hendrix's influence
(it's easy to understand why, but bs nonetheless).
Hell, the way Prince used to dress was Hendrix
personified. It’s logical that as time goes on he
would progress, being a working musician.

The less Prince says publicly, the more his fans
assume about his influences...and many other things.

Give me a break and quit spreading this bullshit around..like Prince never heard of any of those bands/artists before "the revolution". "Introduced", rolleyes

what an idiotic statement and rumor

Lawd.

lol

Lisa, Wendy, and Susannah's constant playing of albums by those artists may have made Prince like those acts more, but they certainly didn't introduce any of them to him. So I get what you're saying, moonshine, it was just poorly worded.

While touring PP during the celebration tour I noticed a large stack of cd's in his recording studio and not very surprisingly he had GCS, Sly, Stevie, James, Chaka, Hendrix, and all his other influences. I didn't really see much new music besides an Ani cd.

I hate goddamn Brett Farve. This is a Purple fourm, buddy. Vikings rule.

I remember an interview with Cat in which she said that she hipped him to The Cocteau Twins.

Oh yeah - he has a BOOTLEG tape of Kate Bush's B-sides in his personal collection if Michael Koppelman is to be believed!

http://gaffa.org/moments/2_2j.html

It's funny because Prince knew I was a huge KB fan. He was too, but not like me. The first time I asked him if he liked Kate Bush he said, she's my favorite woman. I also made him a tape of all the KB b-sides, which fucking rule.
