I could wax lyrical with beautifully written couplets regarding the power, majesty and meaning of this song, but I'll refrain at this time.
All I will say is that anyone who has ever felt what this song is implying would not have to ask for an explanation.

OK... but what does it mean?

Okay...

Power Fantastic attempts to personify loneliness as a cold wind which can burn out a person's internal flame.

Finding a connection with a higher power is sometime all a genius has to maintain their connections with the common denominator reality which is perceived by the masses.

The song reaches out to 'normal' people who find it difficult (and even frightening) to question the meaning of their existance.

This is Prince saying: "I'm alone here on Earth but I acknowledge the existence of God. No-one can understand me but the being who created me."

It's no coincidence that Prince wrote the lyrics to this song following his prolonged and agonising break-up with Susannah.

Power Fantastic was recorded in March 1986. They broke up in December 1986.

Lovesexy was just around the corner...

Hey, Danny. Doesn't Prince believe sex is a way of worshipping God?

You dont actually believe he believes that do you? Its his excuse to be a poon hound, that's all that is.

Sorry.
... during their prolonged and agonising break up.
Experts also say that overt pedanticness can lead to cardiac arrest in early life.

LOL. My doctor just told me today my cholesterol is through the roof (like in the 1000s) and my blood pressure is 150/110. I'm not even close to overweight but I guess I still don't need anything more to lead me to a cardiac arrest. I'll back off!

They did have a 'strange relationship'.

No,no. This was way before Anna. Recorded in March 1986. Prince met Anna on the Lovesexy tour.

I for one apreciate Number23's posts in this thread.

I have always loved the lyrics, as a teenager I would often listen to this on the headphones, followed by U Gotta Shake Something, and stare out of the window at the stars - I never thought about Prince's personal life in this song (so I think Number23 has brought something to the table here that I never thought of) I always heard the lyrics in regards to my own life - I think that's why I like the song so much, it comes across so impersonal to Prince that the essence of the song is transferable to the listener, beyond whatever inspired the song to be written.

I have regarded this track of one of Prince's finest since I heard it, and I think it was uber-cool that they put it on the Hits/B-Sides (I can't imagine that being Prince's decision?)
