Harsh review of "Controversy"(the album)

I was serfing the internet and found this:

Not much background on this one. He did ease up on the sex with this one, but it's more or less "Dirty Mind 2".

Starting off the album is the title track
"Controversy". The title does make one wonder if it will be, indeed, controversial. Not really, though it IS the best one song on the album, nothing not to like here.

Next is "Sexuality", basicly an anthem about freedom. Some interesting lyrics towards the end.

Next is "Do Me, Baby", the slow jam of the album. It's okay, though the ending may induce cringing, laughing, or both.

Next is "Private Joy", a very underrated tune. Nothing bad to say about this one.

Now we're onto "Ronny Talk To Russia". A short little ditty about, well, not so sure what it's about, I'm not even sure if he was trying to be political or if it was tongue-in-cheek (I hope it's the latter).
If you ignore the lyrics it's quite good.

Next is the funky song of the album, "Let's Work". Though the 12" is miles above the album version, it's still the second best song of the album.

Next is "Annie Christain", a song about the "evils" of the world. The spoken lyrics is what makes this song work.

Next is the closer of the album, "Jack U Off", and I know what you're thinking; the answer is yes. Prince attempt at a rockabilly song, it's solid, nothing special, but enjoyable.

"Controversy", the album, is pretty mediocre by Prince's standards. It's enjoyable, but don't expect any revelations with this one. As I've said earlier it's pretty much "Dirty Mind 2", proving my theory that sequels aren't always the best way to go...

Did the person actually have ears on when he listened to the album. If indeed he did listen - on now wait a minute he must have as he said Private Joy was OK.

What a wanker! I wonder if the person is still around and what their thoughts are on it now? If they were a Prince fan from Dirty Mind then maybe they have learnt to appreciate it and have grown to understand that you can't compare album to album.

I can't believe people get paid to write this dribble!!
In the distance a light shines and I know it is mine. Someday I will touch it because it calls me. It says cross the line, cross the line. I know everything is not always what it seems, so I pinch myself daily just in case it's a dream

I've actually heard many a reviewer make that Dirty Mind 2 statement. I think they were all so blown away by Dirty Mind that they couldn't get past it. I hear many similarities in P's songs but for me these two albums are night and day.

Here's what they think of "Dirty Mind":

Released in late 1980, this album is considered to be Prince's "breakout" album.
Prince's third album, "Dirty Mind", was/is quite an album. It has great music and lyrics that leave little, very little to the imagination.
and then there's the cover...

The album starts off with the title track, which is safe enough (lyricly), and has a killer synth line done by band member Dr. Fink (matt fink). Nothing outstanding, but not too shabby either.

Next there's "when you were mine" (later covered by Cyndi Lauper), which is sheer pop perfection. Truly Prince at his best. Very reminicent of 60s pop, but still unique.

"Do it all night" is up next. I think the title pretty much tells you what this song is about. Nothing too special about this one, the "dud" of this album.

Now there's "gotta broken heart again", the ballad. Great vocal delivery.

"Uptown" is next, one of Prince's first minor "hits".

Aw, here we go, now we're onto "head". And yes, i know what you're thinking---you're right. Very funky, sexually frank song. A song that would pave the way for quite possibly one of Prince's favorite subjects.
Here he shares vocals with new band member Lisa Coleman.

Now moving onto "sister". Seems safe enough, right? Well, nope, it 's not. Pretty far from it infact. It's a 1 minute and 33 second long song about incest. Enough said.

The last song, "partyup" is an anti war song written by Morris Day. Day gave Prince permission to use the lyrics in exchange for a record deal.
Somewhat rowdy and angry, this'll surely bring out you're inner punk.

Great album, but don't play this if you have prudes or kids around.

At least they didn't flat out diss this one. lol

Seriously though, who would think "Jack U Off" was a rockabilly song just from it's title?
