"When Doves Cry" Forget the fact that it was the biggest-selling single of 1984,and that it stayed at Number One for weeks. It's a true MASTERPIECE,an intoxicating gem that has aged remarkably well.It still sounds as fresh, daring and vital as it did when we first heard it in the late spring of 1984.It's not only HIS best song,it's one of the best pop songs of all-time! Very good point. I always forget about this one because it's burned into my head from listening to it over and over and over. I agree. When Doves Cry. Absolutely. Crazy ass lyrics, amazing harmonies, guitar solos, hypnotic linn drums. WHOO. Great. If only he'd rapped in that song. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

The trick is to not listen to it for a few weeks/months, works with the majority of Prince's hits like 'PR', 'Kiss' etc. Then you'll realise their brilliance again.

Definitely.
And, now that I think about it, I realize, I don't even OWN a copy of Purple Rain anymore. I mean - I got the cassette, and at one time, i HAD the LP, and I got the DVD, but damn. I don't have the CD. I'd LOVE to spin that sucker from start to finish right now. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

I stuck it on my discman and thought "this man IS a genius"

I think that by a short length, the best is "Adore."
"And God Created Woman" ain't too far behind. "Crystal Ball" also captures Prince's eclectic genius, wrapping themes of love, sex, Armageddon and God in one funky, orchestral, irreverent package. some consideration should also be given to the hypnotic "When Doves Cry." Think back to the first time you heard that song. It had the same effect a song like "Purple Haze" has when you first hear it. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

POWER FANTASTIC
* Unreleased for years.. and amazing!! HOW could you sit on a song like that for years & years?? You can tell he had more toys to play with when he made that song.. IT must have been one of the first songs he recorded on PP

Its got to be "If I Was Your Girlfriend" - it contains nearly all the classic Prince traits in one song.
Its got: The speeded up genderless vocal; Hypnotic Drum Machine beat; Sexually ambiguous point of view; Discordant keyboards; It documents a love you / hate you relationship; Funky guitar licks; Hollering; Sexually descriptive lyrics. The only classic Prince trait it doesn't have, is any mention of God or the comparison of sexual ecstacy to religious ecstacy.
