Why is Eddie Hazel revered as such a legend? Honestly curious here. I've seen him play, I've listened to him, and it's nothing remarkable. The man could PLAY, don't get me wrong, but he's nowhere near Hendrix or Prince, though I would have thought he WAS, what with the way he's held in such high regard. Don't call me an idiot cracker or nothing like that. I'm honestly curious about this. I DO want to appreciate him for his talent, and I'm obviously just listening to the wrong songs. So. Point me in the right direction. What songs did he just rip it out and cut loose? So much so that you would put him above Ernie Isley. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

Eddie Hazel was Phenomenal and not mediocre.
DeWayne Blackbird Mcknight is now the best p-funk guitarist even better than Kid Funkadelic. Luminous beings are we...not this crude matter.
Is this 2morrow or just the END of time? The Funk will always b with u "I've got a face, not just my race, Bang Bang I've got you babe!"

speaking of guitars what is the standard guitar equivilant of his famous cloud guitars.
I'm thinking Gibson les paul just in it's attack and tonality but it could be a stratocaster any ideas. Luminous beings are we...not this crude matter.

Nah you have a point, but I think it's the way he created the funk using his guitar more than his guitar playing in general. You can hear him rip like mad at the ends of Super Stupid or Red Hot Mama (which sadly fade out on the albums), but to me it was never about the ripping, it was more about funk guitar rythm in general. Hazel seemed to take the funkiness of Hendrix and nurture it into something that at least I've never heard done before that era - more apparent on his solo stuff. Check out Games, Dames and Guitar Thangs (FANTASTIC version of California Dreamin' on that), or Rest in P, or Jams From The Heart. Probably all on Kazaa. To thebanishedone: As for Maggot Brain, well, Mike Hampton could practise those notes all he liked, but he was never the one who came up with that shite - NOR Hendrix before. You can say that SRV plays Little Wing best.

Prince has NEVER EVER EVER played a solo as deep as "Maggot Brain" in my opinion. YES, I've heard "Small Club", etc.,blah, blah, blah. "Maggot Brain" was the black guitarist's "Stairway To Heaven". On the REAL! Ernie Isley is a MONSTER live. Go peep the "Livewire" album. MONSTER. PERIOD. Prince is damn good, but he ain't THERE.

the solo of stairway to heaven is shit IMO. shit no, but it's nothing great, it's an ordinary solo.

And i think prince have at least 10 studio solos better than maggot brain.

The morning papers, purple rain live on SOME occasions and last but not least just my imaginaaationnn. P.S. Prince is not my favorite guitar player. But i think that he kicks eddie hazel asss.

It was Purple Rain that I had in mind when I was thinking that Prince has never had a solo to compare to Maggot Brain. The live version of Maggot Brain stomps out anything I've heard Prince play on guitar by MILES. We just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Listen to Funkadelic’s album "Standing on the verge of getting it on"
Eddie Hazel rules!!! He has co-written most of those tunes under the pseudo-name Cook, and his guitar-work is so excellent!!
