I love ALL works created in what I refer to as the "solo" experimental years.. 1980-1982.

I'll change my mind in 5 seconds but at this moment I'd have to say When You Were Mine.

At 3:44, it's direct and to the point. Absolutely genius how he fuses together Reggae, New Wave, Rock, Funk.. it's all in there.

Joy in Repetition

For the lines "The songs a year long and has been playing for months"

and "These 2 words, a little bit behind the beat, I mean just enough to turn you on"

and the guitar solo...

I wonder U

simply the greatest expression of love ever taken from a pen and put on to a piece of paper...not only that it has one one them small, "Only-could-ever-be-Prince" guitar riffs at the end that sends shivers down the spine and make you nostalgic for all things good in the past.

What a song.

It's all subjective ain't it.

Personally I would have said The Beautiful Ones based on emotional input, which after all is one of the most important elements of a song.

But then recently, I discovered that Joy in Repetition is in fact, THE BEST SONG EVER WRITTEN BY PRINCE, JUST BECAUSE IT IS nod. Give GB a chance and listen to it - I can't believe I missed that song all these years. Is there an extended version of it anywhere without the screwed up overdubbed intro as with the album version??

AUTOMATIC

It's so hypnotic - it's like a drug that I get hooked on! It's complex and simple at the same time. Everything is perfect about this song.

And NOW I'm thinking, "Let's Go Crazy"? Too mainstream.

"If I was your girlfriend". orgasmic crescendo. double entendre beaten to a pulp and simmered over smooth horn lines.

no.

I mean.

ADORE.

no, I mean, PARTY UP.

crap

It's a really tough call, but I think "Love 2 the 9s" has everything I love about Prince's music in one song. That's my personal best.

Runners up are I Hate U, She Spoke 2 Me, The One, and Play in the Sunshine.

A tough one but I'm going with Purple Rain. That song has so much power in it from start to finish. That song just takes me away everytime I hear it and it's the one song that everyone seems to like along with When Doves Cry.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Anna Stesia. That's the most powerful song he's made in my opinion. Purple Rain, The Love We Make, and Last December are close but not quite there.

I always fall back to "7". But a good runner-up would be the song that got me into his music: "When Doves Cry".

I can't choose one. I can't! I'm thinking of 10 songs at the same time. Or even more...

But at this moment I would say The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker

For me "Crystal Ball" is Prince at his very best: funky, experimental, cool lyrics.

Runners up are "Sometimes It Snows In April", "Adore" and "The Beautiful Ones".
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

For some reason, when we do these types of threads, many fans are reluctant to choose the most popular, most successful songs. But I'm gonna just come right out and say it...

"When Doves Cry"

Forget the fact that it was the biggest-selling single of 1984,and that it stayed at Number One for weeks. It's a true MASTERPIECE,an intoxicating gem that has aged remarkably well.It still sounds as fresh, daring and vital as it did when we first heard it in the late spring of 1984.It's not only HIS best song,it's one of the best pop songs of all-time!
