I THOUGHT THAT PRINCE'S ONLY INVOLEMENT IN "STAND BACK" WAS PLAYING KEYBOARDS?...RIGHT? ON THE OFFICIAL ASCAP SITE WHERE THE WORKS ARE REGISTERED IT LISTS BOTH STEVIE AND PRINCE AS THE WRITERS. WHAT GIVES?

AND AS FOR THE OTHER TITLES, I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THEM.

ANY ORGHEADS GOT THE LOW DOWN ON THESE SONGS?

Junk Music is that intrumental jamming stuff that Prince never released.

The other songs are just songs in the vault, I'd guess.

Stand Back is a shitty song. I'd avoid admitting I wrote it too.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

"I Feel Stereo" by Dino Lenny is a weird house/techno-track. Any Prince-involvement is quite doubtful.

In an interview Stevie Nicks stated that song was directly influenced by Little Red Corvette. She said she was listening to that song when she came up with Stand Back. In fact, she said "If you replace the lyrics to Stand Back with the lyrics to Little Red Corvette, they match up perfectly with the music". She said she felt it right to give Prince co-writing credit since she felt her song was directly influenced by Little Red Corvette.

Junk Music was one of them instrumental songs Prince, Levi, Sheila did before Madhouse was formed. I do believe that song was featured in the race scene in UNDER THE CHERRY MOON if I remember correctly smile

As the songwriter Nicks can give a writing credit if she wants. There are times when a songwriter feels that a musician's contribution to the arrangement is so essential to the song that they give said musician a writing credit. Nicks was inspired to write the song because of Prince's "Little Red Corvette" at that time. It's all up to the copyright holder, i.e., Stevie Nicks.

Here's the Search Engine:

http://www.ascap.com/ace/...imeout=300

However, I would pay careful attention to the way you use it.

Firstly, as with all databases, it will only give out what is in there, and inevitably there are errors because people who input the data make mistakes.

Secondly, think about the results you get based on the search you requested. For example, if you undertake a search against 'Wendy Melvoin', you may see a list of songs to which she contributed, That doesn't make her the sole songwriter. To check, search against the song title as well.

Moreover, as is pointed out above, a sonwriting credit might be attributed by the copyright holder for a variety of reasons. They might feel they were inspired by another song, they might have co-written with someone, or they might have included a brief sample from a song written by someone they have never even met.

The Ace database tries to include alternative names, but to track down as much as possible, you need to think through what you are searching against. Remember, Prince has used other names (Alexander Nevermind, Joey Coco etc.) Additionally sometimes entries might be included under 'Prince', 'Nelson', 'Prince Roger Nelson', 'Prince Rogers Nelson', 'Nelson Prince', etc..

I've said before on previous threads that these sort of searches are also undertaken by the people at Uptown to check / verify Prince's work, so an investment in 'Turn It Up 2.0' or the forthcoming 'The Vault' would make sense, if you are interested in this sort of thing.

However, if you want to undertake your own research along these lines, also check out the Library of Congress Copyright database website on:

http://www.loc.gov/copyri.../cohm.html

where the same sort of alternative searches and caution needs to be exercised. This website is sometimes unavailable during weekends. Happy hunting.

Oh and the Uptown website address is, of course:

http://www.uptown.se/2002/index.shtml
ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.
