The Rainbow Children My how time flies. 2 years ago today Prince's last major release was, uh, released. I know that's not taking into consideration the ONAL boxed set or news. Just work with me here, OK!? Jeez! Anyway! TRC contained some really good shit. Well not shit in the truest sense of nasty brown stuff that comes out of your ass but...to paraphrase it contained some really good stuff...OK, 'stuff' is too general; uh, songs. That's the word I was looking
for,songs, it contains some really good 'songs'. *cough*. Anyway. Let's celebrate Prince's first full-fledged headfirst dive into mainstream jazz by posting something NICE about TRC.   Proud member of Prince's cult for 20 years! | |

Musically, it's possibly his greatest work thus far. He finally found the signpost for artistry after 10 lost years spent gazing aimlessly at his own reflection.
Conceptually, it's as ambitious as a Dali or Monet. It's a moving sound painting and a quadraplegic could swim in the colour he conjures up with this work. Lyrically, it's all relative to each and everyone. It can be perceived as a kaledieoscopic fairytale or a zealot's mental breakdown. I dig this album, although after 2 years, it seems (IMO) it lacks energy.. I dig his concept albums though, I like them all to flow from track to track..
I guess the highlights are: Sensual Everafter Rainbow Childer Loves me for me Last December Muse 2 The Pharoh Everlasting Now Maybe one more.. but Last December is the best thing out of that cd.. I remember a few fillers in that cd though. | |

I still think that this is Prince's return to true artistry (after the overtly commercial nineties). TRC harkens back to LoveSexy and ATWIAD imho in terms of experiment and central theme.
Also, the "live" sound is a welcome change after the proceeding albums. It's nice to know that he made the choice of doing something different and fresh. (He switched off automatic pilote, and is now behind the steering wheel once again )
Finally,, there are some really decent songs on the album, although the voice-over tends to mess things up occasionally: Rainbow Children Muse Mellow 1+1+1 is 3 She Loves Me 4 Me Family Name The Everlasting Now Last December All in all, a good album, and a nice starter for the third decade (3 1/2?...) of his career.  555-4444 you're on coffee talk. | |

I just listened to TRC to celebrate - it's still probably the Prince album that gets the most play in my house even after 2 years.
I agree that Prince took off the autopilot. It's interesting to note that in the credits, it says 'Recorded and mixed at Paisley Park - 2001 - Year One' like Prince himself is saying this is the start of something. Just listen to the rest of his output from TRC > NEWS. A new beginning for sure. This is the dawning of a new spiritual revolution... | |

TRC is very cool. I've liked it from day one, although I still say I do not like some of the lyrics, but the music is tight and his voice is amazing. | |
