the song "Hello"

this song is like Prince call for freedom way back then.

I haven't lost my desire
I wouldn't beg U
Instead of playin' deduction of what 2 do
They called me rude often
When I called their hand
They judged me and told me that we're through
"Why can't U be like the others?"
I cried out over and again
"Why can't U learn 2 play by the rules?"
But maybe at last it's the end
Because I am not like others
I'm unique in the respect I'm not U

I know in my heart I would try 2 love U
I wouldn't try 2 hurt U despite all the ways U try 2 hurt me
U call me a fraud, an uncaring wretch
But I'm an artist and my only aim is 2 please
Between U and yours, myself and mine
Isn't life cruel enough without cruel words, cruel words?
U see, words are like shoes
They're just something 2 stand on
I wish U could be in my shoes
But they're probably so high, U'd fall off and die
4 U words are definitely not shoes
They're weapons and tools of destruction
And your time is boring unless U're putting something down
What would life be if we believed what we read
And a smile is just hiding a frown?
Come now, isn't life a little better with a pair of good shoes?

This is a great tune. Very upbeat and funky. I remember playing this song to death as was on my mother's Talking Heads(my other favorite) mixtape.

I gotta say that it almost got more play in my house than the song that was on the "A" side. (POP LIFE)

Gotta be the 12 incher once again. Ok the opening is psycafunkadelic. then
when they get onto the groove watch out. ya got the real kick drum or whatever
hittin in the pocket...Lisa and W and Sheila? singin hello like some weird
harpies...then p comes in with his story non chalantly then the chorus comes in
" u call em bodyguards but i call em my friends"..Sly style and groovin. Then
their against hungry children! They gonna do what they can etc...

Then the breakdown...simple drums and keyboards playin a simple rhyme...then
on the long version u have some chicken grease-chicken scratch educated geetar
playing turnin into keyboard jamm...mmkay, works for me..dont forget the
drums and bass is still jammin in this hodgepodge...

Then Prince comes back with a vocoder voice and Lisa or Wendy or Jill moanin
in the back ground with Prince complainin about playin by the rules and he
breaks it down "Im unique in the respect im not u" in a funny upper crust
voice

then he breaks it dowwn while the music runs into itself givin his speech of
whats right n wrong...raggin on the critics and metaphorically turning it
into life as a pair of shoes...whoo! that part is like the relief from the
jammin. And your left with the thought of havin new shoes-actin right. Per got
it wrong..this isnt a throwaway...never was.

TonyC

that is one of my favorite B-sides...I like how instead of doing interviews back then to explain things, he just put it into a funky-ass song.

I always had the idea back then that Prince named it "Hello" just to piss off Mr. Ritchie. hehe!
