Hahn's "Possessed"...It Ain't Over I finally read through a few sections of this last night. Beyond some scattered factual errors, I found it interesting and less of the total slash-and-burn job I was lead to believe it would be. What was the general take on this book around here? To salacious and muddled about what music was good and what not...beyond that I think this book captures the peaks and troughs of Prince's career well.

The book is written from the perspective of a non-fan/former-fan. Books like this need to be written once in a while, to show us this outsider's angle. There are sources quoted that were and are close to Prince.
People can believe that Prince isn't the man portrayed in Possessed. That's their option. The book doesn't read as a personal attack on Purp. Instead I felt that it was at-once, being open and honest about the man who is, when all is said and done, just a human being. A human being with power, money, ego and a drive to try and create a masterpiece at every turn. Things don't, and can't always work out for our little hero. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Possessed is a biography, I read it and it left a very cold feeling in my heart. What I want to read is a book about the music. Prince is a musician afterall. Sure there's a market for tittle-tattle, hearsay and gossip about people in the public eye, there always will be. But his life just isn't as interesting as his music. Is it?
(to be continued...) ------------------------------------------------
if the music's good... all else will follow ------------------------------------------------

I'm Currently reading it, almost done. If I could re-title it, it would be...
"Alex Hahn's Perceptions, Assumptions, Opinions and Misbeliefs of The Life of Prince Rogers Nelson." Not to knock the book, it's a great little read. BUT there's a HUGE element missing. PRINCE'S side! Which in the case of this particular book, holds some importance. Blue [This message was edited Mon Nov 3 21:40:35 PST 2003 by TheBluePrince] Blue

The proper title should be "Possessed: The Rise and Fall of a Prince Fan" "That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

i finished reading it a week b4 the melboing concert. it was a good read, and gave me a good perspective on an artist that i hold such a high asteem for. there was alot in there that i didnt know about Prince, both interesting and shocking, but all in all it was a great insight to Princes career
the only problem i had was that imo alex hahn trashed almost all of his albums, xcept for PR, SOTT and emancipation, i know that it is his opinion and i respect that, but from wy point of view, ALL of his albums are great, u can see how Prince matured as an artist and grew as each album was released. the impression i got is that he isnt much of a prince fan, and from reading this thread, i can see that he is an "outsider" to his music, but wrote a good book nonetheless.
