Byron

Chaos & Disorder

New Power Soul

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic

That was the Holy Trinity of "Lights out, party's over...Prince is done, no need to follow him anymore" albums for many Prince fans, in my opinion...

I think ive finally cracked it - what Im trying 2 put across here is this:

The best and truly exceptional albums that Prince has given us 2 date seem 2 be the ones that:

A) u just dont 'get' straight away, (and yes - that CAN alienate some of the fan base. Of course, there will always be differences of opinion, and that is just down 2 personal taste).

B) That u have 2 work with, persevere with, and let age like a fine wine...
big grin

Who knows...maybe in a year or 2 I'll be adding NEWS with the three I previously mentioned...

No, I don't think you'll mention N.E.W.S. That album is just too out there and not Prince-ly enough.

Anyways, it doesn't really matter to me if you think those albums are out there or may alienate fans or whatever. I like them simply cuz...HE'S F***ING PRINCE, DUDE!!!
HE'S THE F***ING MAN!!! It was all about the funk! It was very colorful, psychedelic, trippy, imaginative, but you could still get down to it.

Listen to Pop Life, Alphabet St., Positivity, 1+1+1=3, The Work pt. 1, Dance On, America, Raspberry Beret, Lovesexy, etc.

These might be out there to you, perhaps, but Prince could still throw down some of the funkiest jams!!!

Same could be said with the Beatles. Sgt. Pepper was out there when it came out, but it still had a funky groove to it.

Gee - thanx 4 the pointaz, rolleyes but I like all the above, and dont have a problem with any of the albums listed above in my original post. In fact, I would say that the 1st two especially are in fact my fave Prince albums.

I'd say that I feel TRC is a direct continuation of Lovesexy. i don't know what but I find those two albums connected.

On both of these, Prince feels free to play the way he wanna playand there is a huge spiritual background on it. Both are about a rebirth for the Man and both albums have an underlying context, a story. these two LPs are what we called concept albums and so are really musically and lyrically coherent. Those two albums are my favorite actually.

Anybody feels the same?

OK this almost delineates the 3 times I lost interest in PRINCE and dumped him.

ATWIAD - "What is this poppy Beatles sounding shit? Where's the funk?"

LOVESEXY "What is this gay-ass nude pose on the cover? WTF? It's all one track!! Where's the funk of the BLACK ALBUM?" (Still it was a very good album)

TRC didn't turn me off from Prince, but I did grow tired of listening to it. It was a non-musical event: the "SLAVE" rebellion and name change to prince that got me the 3rd time.

This post completely sums up the two sides of Prince and his followers. I do state my fan level as obsessed and this post really offended me.

omfg
Three key words leap out at me: "followers" "obsessed" and "offended". Being that none of them apply to my association with Prince & his music I can only scoff at your sense of personal violation.

It really is "just music".

How about:

Sign O' the Xs

This is more like it. I agree that all of the other albums listed were important but none came close to DEFINING his career than these 3 albums.

Of course I'm American. African-American. What, d'you think I was Swedish or Pakistani or something? Anyways, the point is, yes the albums might've turned off some fans cuz they were not funky right up front, but that's not to say that it lacks the stank. Our musical hero was just hitting us at a diffrent angle with a different set of arms. Remember what I said about The Beatles and their classic, "Magical Mystery Tour"? Well you could compare the same thing to this case. This whole topic could be of humor to you, Banana but behind every joke lies some truth. And the truth is...

I think these three came from the soul its like he was born 2 make em
Lovesexy or though sounding a little dated now is still imho
a first class example of his pure talent(the same could also be said for TRC).

isnt this thread about the 3 albums that prince made that alienated him from the MAINSTREAM?! not prince fans, who the fuck on the org would start a thread about how lovesexy alienated him from his fanbase, its probably his more fan revered album, along with SOTT.

id agree these 3 alienated him from the mainstream most, on purpose. by accident yeah rave etc might have done that, but again not point of thread i dont think!

after purple rain coming up with ATWIAD, well i cant think of another artist with the sheer bollocks to do that. seriously, imagine MJ coming up with that after thriller. thats the extent, its hard to imagine if you werent around, like me! at the time of purple rain being top of the charts singles and albums (or WDC was but still). to go from that, to not doing promotion or singles for the first 3 months of his next album, the fact he brought another album out in a years time is amazing enough, i mean, he could have maximised sales for PR if he wanted to, took it over 20million easily.

as for TRC, while a definate departure from rave, did he have a mainstream anyway? although i agreehe was definately proving a point with that album, ironically generally its been praised critically and fan-wise. but its definately a mainstream album departure!

DIAMONDGEEZA

the 3 important albums in my opinion where:(1)1999(one of his greatest works from early on that set us up for what was to come,(2)Sign of the Times(critics and fans alike Agree that this was just an essential cd from the eighties that needed to be in everyones collection.(3)The Rainbow Children(very original and inspirational.after feeling slightly letdown with rave un2 the joy fantastic.an album that wasnt easy to pick up but when u did it was musically very rewarding).

I would say that the 3 most important albums in Prince's career are:
#1_ 1999 :this was a big break in Prince's musical career
#2_ Purple Rain: He became a superstar, an icon and will be remembered forever for it
#3_SOTT : Pure genius

Dirty Mind (first signs of genius and still progressive today)

Purple Rain (yea, Purple Rain - like it or not)

Rainbow Children/SOTT (its a tie - what can I say)

Now the thread changed significantly (from 3 most fan-alienating to 3 most important)

1. Dirty Mind -- Defined the Prince persona for decades.

2. Purple Rain -- The influence and success of the album gave him the flexibility to do everything he's done since then.

3. Sign O' The Times -- His masterpiece.

Three good choices.

These three albums changed his future.

The only way I would pick Rainbow Children is because it sounds as FIRM as these albums did in the old days. Except that I still feel connected to the other three albums and never got connected to TRC... my atheist nature.

I'd agree that it's a significant album from a career standpoint b/c thematically and spiritually he's going in a different direction. It would be somewhere in the top 10 in terms of career importance, but many would not include among his 10 best.

I won´t choose 3 albums ... For me the best one , the jewel of the Prince Crown is Sign "0" The Times. The rest is ..."the rest". The one and only is SOTT. In my opinion best years of Prince are 1986, 1987 and 1988.

I don´t care if was comercial or not .. I only think how much I like..and not how many copies were sold.
