Morris Day

After leaving The Time in 1985, Morris Day met with initial, then diminishing,
success as a solo recording artist. His 1985 debut solo album, The Color of
Success, produced by former Time compatriots Jam & Lewis, spawned a modest hit
in the dance groove "Oak Tree." The song caught Morris's fromer boss's
attention, as Prince parodied "Oak Tree" in some of his own concerts that year,
and can be seen doing so on Sheila E.'s live concert videotape, Romance 1600.
Day's second 1988 solo album, Daydreaming, generated the #1 R&B hit "Fishnet."
Once again the input of Jam & Lewis was key to the project's success.

Morris Day wrote and produced his own girl group, The Day Zs, 1990 self-titled
debut, to little recognition. Day's final solo album to date, 1992's
Guaranteed, was not well received.

In 1990, Day returned to The Time to participate in Prince's film and album
Graffit Bridge and The Time album Pandemonium. With the input of Prince and Jam
& Lewis, Pandemonium went gold, as did it's first single, "Jerk Out," a #1 R&B
and Dance hit. The reconstituted Time, minus Jam & Lewis, toured briefly in
Japan in 1990. Morris Hayes, later to become a member of Prince's New Power
Generation band, substituted on keyboards for Jimmy Jam during this tour.

Morris Day also had a modest acting career after he won acclaim for Purple
Rain. After making a guest appearance on the TV comedy 227, Day co-starred with
Sheryl Lee Ralph (Moesha) in a 1990 limited-run comedy series on ABC-TV called
New Attitude, in which Day portrayed a hairdresser. Day and compatriot Jerome
Benton, also of The Time, filmed a 1991 pilot called Hotel Dicks for FOX-TV
which was never picked up by the network. In 1993, Morris and Jerome appeared
in a comedic play entitled Lawd Ha' Mercy, which toured the USA.

Morris Day is currently touring to sell-out houses with The Time in the Purple
Rain Reunion Tour, performing all the old Time numbers from their four albums,
The Time, What Time Is It?, Ice Cream Castle, and Pandemonium.
