Actually no, because he is the boyfriend, now he wants to see it from both angles. Male and female. On a open emotional scale...

"Would you run to me, if somebody hurt you, even if that somebody was me"
What a powerful line. Twice now, after break-ups (or something like it) this line comes to mind. Imagine you are best friends with your lover, so when you break up with your lover, who do you want to cry to? Your best friend. But what happens when your best friend IS your lover. That's the feeling. Prince wants her to feel as close to him as she does her girlfriend.. tell him all the things she tells her girlfriend, etc.

Indeed. Susan Rogers said in an interview that Prince was a bit peeved about the relationship between her and the Melvoin's. She said that women sometimes have an understanding of each other that men dont. Prince was apparently trying 2 identify what it must be like 2 have this kind of relationship.

According to Prince's sound recordist Susan Rogers, the track dealt with Prince's observations of Susannah, Wendy and Lisa. Prince was supposedly jealous of the closeness between the twins and Wendy and Lisa. Females can have a bond that men just can't get involved in.
In American terms, "girlfriend" can just mean female, platonic friend, not "going out with". So, listen to the track again, replace "girlfriend" with, say, "best friend" and see if it makes any more sense. To be honest, I didn't get it for ages either. Please note, this was written after a few glasses of wine. If I've explained anything incorrectly, some smartarse will be along shortly to correct me! ...I go 2 the max...I'm not afraid...I wanna dance...

I always thought the very first line of "If I was your girlfriend would you remember to tell me all of things u forgot when I was your MAN" kind of explained it well. How can you be jealous of the relationship between twin sisters??

Remember that guy? His fur hat was DOPE! All the gals say hoe if your man's giving up the gold. All the fellas say ruff if you're only giving up the bone.

if you're lonely and you want that kind of a bond. this song has always been one of my favorites. I'd even say that this song is what made me become a Prince fan.

I've always felt that this was a very moving song. It is complex and just a little bit needy. Not something you hear everyday eventhough most folks have moments like that. I'm firmly planted in denial
