Thumbs down to Aladdin DVD I just viewed the Aladdin DVD for the first time today 20, October and although I think his current albums, NEWS and Rainbow Children are brilliant, the energy in the new music doesn't really come across in live performances (or at least not in this DVD). The fire and urgency has gone. I don’t even think a Revolution reunion could save him at this point. He came, he saw, he conquered... game over. The Prince and the Revolution Live VHS in Syracuse... now that’s some smokin’ shit. [This message was edited Mon Oct 20 17:56:48 PDT 2003 by marcdeondotcom]

I completly disagree...The Aladin DVD shows how great a musician Prince has developed into. I had some family members over and showed the DVD, specifically 1+1+1 =3. They are not Prince listeners but they were speechless. After the viewing, a long conversation took place about how there are very few acts that can still move a crowd the way Prince can.
Although I agree that Prince and the Revolution in Syracuse is awesome, the biggest difference is that the 1984-1995 Prince was very commercial. Today, its more about the music and putting out songs that display great musicianship. I also notice in some of the orgers, there are those of us that have not developed our taste with the music, the style and even the musicians. Heck, go to a Price concert just for the drummer alone if you don't like Prince. Talent wise, he currently has some of the best musicians backing him. Prince is still awesome and I understand why he has this"do whatever you want attitude". He just cant please everyone so no use trying. Prince has certainly made his share of mistakes. A lot can be credited to youthful immaturity. And he indeed is not the greatest businessman, but I wouldnt want to be judged by something I did when I was 25 years old. Its about growing up and maturing. Prince has grown and matured. You can indeed hear it in his music and I for one appreciate it. [This message was edited Mon Oct 20 18:14:00 PDT 2003 by brobyn]

The performances are great, the musicianship is great, but the whole thing is let down by the crappy "thin" sound.
I can live with the ordinary picture quality (it looks like it was shot through muddy water) but the lack of decent sound quality is really dissapointing. If you think the sound quality on this DVD is good then this nothing I can possibly do to help you, I'm sorry, you need your ears checked. I still like the performance and I'm glad I've got it (it's way better than most boots still) but the quality of the DVD is shite. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

Well , I was at that show and the only disappointment was that the DVD did'nt show how they opened, with Prince, then Sheia E, then John Blackwell doing this sort of disappearing act with the drums. Hey look, eveyone is entitled to their opinion. I dont feel like I got ripped off. Overall I think it's a great DVD. The sound is cool to me. When I play it in my surround sound it sounds crisp. I guess I am not that anal. I can sit back, pop in a DVD and not over analyze. The way they recorded, it did not take advantage of the DVD technology like the RAVE DVD, but nothing jumped out at me that was paticularly terrible.

Well, I liked the damn thing. It was only fifteen lousy bucks and it was more inspired than the Rave DVD and most of the home video crap he churned out in the early '90s. Yeah, the quality is infamously dodgy, but ya get to use them ear muscles ya got from alla them years of bootlegs to fill in the audio blanks, see.

Hey Prince... the Shite Store called, and they want their DVD back.
I'm going with Shite Store. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Dated? if more artists today could put on a performance as good as that we'd all be happier.
