What do you think of Exodus?

I bought it today and it was a lot better than I thought it would be.'Get Wild', 'Count the Days','Cherry,Cherry' are great tracks.
Maybe a little too much cusing?
But some of the interludes are hilairious!
your thoughts?

It's all about the interludes.

"The Exodus has begun" sounds like a throwaway track. Hallucination Rain however, is definitely one for the ages!!!

The interludes are hilarious, especially Mashed Potato Girl. There are some awesome tracks on here, especially Big Fun, Return of the Bump Squad, Hallucination Rain, and that helluva funky tune The Exodus has Begun.

A little too much cussing for my liking though.
Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Classic example of Prince not knowing what he had when he did it. All the time, he was bitching about Warner and then he released this record overseas that would have been HUGE if he'd released it here.

One of my favorites from that period...

Oh my god!

This is an unbeleivable FUNK BOMB! Can somebody say KABOOM!

I played this to death when it came out. Return Of The Bump Squad, Get Wild, New Power Soul & Big Fun are the bombdiggy! I used to mix Big Fun with "Mr Intellectual" by Menace in the club. Anyone know that one?

The Exodus Has Begun...Mother Fucker!

only stupid thing is the way some samples are dubbed over by stupid scratching sounds so you can't hear them anymore, especially in THE EXODUS HAD BEGUN.
The Steeles and ToraTora are an excellent combination though.

i think 'The exodus has begun' is one of his best. I've played that track hundreds of times.

But all of my friends (no fans) hate it. they think the song is a mess. Too complex for them probably..

Don't know if i ever heard it live, maybe at his Gold-tour?

Too much swearing for the sake of swearing (if that makes sense) Prince tryin' to appear all "hard" and "street" by saying "(mother)fuck" every other word. Now I like a good cuss as much as the next motherfucker but this is silly. Rarely listen to it.

Exodus is a good album, despite having too many segues, and is far better than Goldnigga or NPS. Get Wild is one of the funkiest things he's ever done, and Big Fun, The Good Life and The Exodus Has Begun are all quality tunes.

There's also an mpeg floating around of Get Wild live on some TV show (might be Spanish - can't remember) with Prince/Tora Tora on Bass and Mayte shakin her moneymaker. Worth hunting around for, if only to see Mayte in action.

Exodus is great.

Maybe a little dis-jointed from all the segues, but the 9 or so songs at it's core make a great little funk CD, and I crack up everytime at the Mashed Potato Girl story.

The out-takes were fantastic too, except It Takes Three lol

Fantastic album - always one of my faves and is one of his best "Concept" albums! His humour really shines through and the segues are great, original and damn funny.

The 2 absolute masterpieces on this album are Return of the Bump Squad and Hallucination Rain - pure gems. But the rest of the tracks on the album are great too - even Cherry, Cherry. Yeah, it may be sickly sweet doo-wop, but it perfectly juxtaposes the story-line and is another example of Prince's uniquely perverse story-telling - the suicide conclusion is not at all expected on first listen.

Somebody said on here that their friends found Exodus has begun too complex. If the track is played in isolation it will sound messy - but, if you listen to it after hearing the whole album, it is entirely differernt. Yes, it almost buckles under its own weighty production but, as an NPG member states at the end of the track "Hahaha - You ain't gonna hear that shit nowhere else" - too true!

I agree. Its unecessarily thuggish and 2 some extent is the record that defines the nadir of Prince's recording career. Its the sound of a man trying 2 be 'down with the kids' and doesn't offer anything original. Sorry, I just don't think its much cop Im afraid.

talkin' about "The Exodus Has Begun"...do u prefer the released version or the alternate original version?

from "Testament"

"The Exodus Has Begun (10:35)" Alternate version. Doesn't have some of the sound effects of the released version.

Erm, well. Id just wandered up 2 Camden after work 1 night cuz I remembered a dodgy geezer who used 2 sell bootlegs on a stall. He wasnt there but there's record shop along the highstreet that sells 2nd hand records and CDs in there on the cheap. Thats where I got Exodus from. I cant remember the name Im afraid.

Soz! sad

Naturally my favorite song on that cd is, Return of the Bump Squad

The Exodus has Begun is the best song on the CD in my opinion. It is hard hitting, balls to the wall, funky. The weighty production is what makes it so good.

I lived in Madrid for a time; a friend there picked it up and we listened to it all the time (usually with a couple j's of ashish...hallucination raiin...oh yeah). However, I haven't been able to find it here in the States. Did I hear earlier that it was only released overseas? Is this right!? Why wouldn't he release it everywhere and where can I get it?
