I Think Greg Boyer is no Good!!!

Greg Boyer sucks so hard
he is so bad. his solos are terrible.
i find it not funky and not jazzy but just a load of poo.
imagine him playing in a jazz club!!!

he should never be compared to Maceo

I must admit he gives a good sound along two other horn players but when it solos it makes me cringe. it's so basic.

I think your dislike of Greg Boyer might be more related to his instrument, than to his abilities.

Overall he's a pretty good trombone player. I really like his muted sound, like on the ONA version of Cool as the Other Side of the Pillow.

Greg Boyer is one of the Gods on funk-trombone. He was working with Parliament, so if he was funky enough for George Clinton, he will be funky enough for you.

He is with Maceo`s band since the early 90s and it was Maceo who has introduced him to Prince.

Prince never had a better bone player, and since Prince recently expands his funk universe, Greg is the best thing that could have happened to him.

Candy is techically brilliant, but I dont dig her playing style too much. Its too clean.

Maceo doesnt really blend in too well with Prince`s funk. he is too much of a master himself to be a good sideman.

Rhonda is good, Neto as well. And blackwell is the baaadest drummer he ever had. Which makes me convinced that this is the best Prince band ever. Even if you are more of a Revolution fan -- Prince never had that many skilled musicians around him as today. If you dig what they play -- thats another story. Thats a story of taste.

Have to disagree with you on the Maceo comment. I think his style blends perfectly with Prince's.

His playing is fantastic in Prettyman, on the ONA triple disc (Xenophobia), but most of all on 1+1+1 is 3 from the concert DVD.

Maceo and Eric Leeds complement each other well, and with Greg, this makes up for one of the best horns section Prince has had imho.

I forwarded this thread to Sir Lieb of Funkadelia and he says:

Man, I can't BELIEVE this thread! Let's get some things straight, funkwise:

1) As Soulpower said, if Greg is funky enough for Dr. Funkenstein, Maceo and Prince, he damn well is funky enough for your and my ass. You DON'T go dissing P-Funk alumni unless you're a serious Sir Nose. Don't make me pull the Bop Gun on that ass. I WILL pull the Bop Gun on that ass. And yeah, if GC jumps in the water I'll damn well be jumping in too, 'cos us maggots can dance underwater and NOT GET WET. Good God. headbang

2) NO-ONE could ever make Fred sound outdated. Fred is beyond space & time in a total funkativity zone beyond the understanding of the brain, only comprehendible to the BOOTIES of specially designed afronauts. Hey Fred! Hey Fred! Hey Fred! FRED IS DEAD! NO HE AIN'T! Ain't it funky. headbang

3) Maceo is THE PERFECT sideman as he's amply demonstrated with Hard Working Mr Dynamite - uh. Good God. - Parliament-Fun-ka-de-lics, Bootsy's Rubber Band and indeed, Prince. Ungh. headbang

Now y'all better recognize and get off your sorry asses and jam before the mothership come to turn y'all out, BROTHERSUCKAS!

I have probably listened to Maceo for too long already ... which is the reason why I find his sound to distictive and individual. When Prince does "Pass the Peas", it sounds more like a Maceo Parker concert.

That was a long time ago.
And he was playing with people who have influenced his playing, so he fit in very well.
Now he plays with a man whom HE influenced.
Not that I dont want mace to play with Prince. I just dont hear him blend in too much. Mace is too much Mace for Prince.

I think he's great.

This horn section is brilliant. They all have a different style.

Candy Dulfer is quite pop-ish I guess u could say- perfect for the solo on Nothing Compares 2 U.

Eric Leeds is more of a jazz man.

Maceo Parker plays funk and RnB, and for me has a sound that's almost too distinctive. Don't get me wrong, I like him, but sometimes, just sometimes, I find him a little repetitive.

Add me to the list of no-nothings then. big grin

By the way, John Blackwell is a huge reason why I love Prince's music right now. Rhonda's a big reason too.

Renato Neto I could definitely do without. Sure, he plays nicely, but his choice of sounds (or is it Prince's?) are awful. What is up with the Pink Floyd-esque synth sounds on the DVD? I hate those parts. "I know u got something funky, for me". Wrong Prince, all wrong. shake

In 2003, when it comes to playing keys, there should only be a few choices if u're a funky bastard. These choice are:

Piano, Rhodes, Clavinet or organ.

Stick with these and u're laughing. smile

Leave synths for Herbie Hancock.

I'm not comparing him to anyone. I just said that when I saw him I wasn't very impressed.

It's funny how some Prince fans (are these the newer and younger ones?) go out of their way to diss anybody associated with PFUNK when the both GC & Prince love each other to death.

I wonder whenthis allhappened? Because of Paisley's failure?
