It's funny how some Prince fans (are these the newer and younger ones?) go out of their way to diss anybody associated with PFUNK when the both GC & Prince love each other to death.

I wonder whenthis allhappened? Because of Paisley's failure?

They cant get the Revolution off their minds and push aside Prince`s musical roots...

Which might have been his best band as it gave him his "signature sound", but that 80s "new wave" sounds so outdated. Don't most agree that Prince's playing gets better with his later groups on SOTT, LOVESEXY and SYMBOL? So he had to move on from that REVOLUTION base and grow.

I remember Greg from his Chuck Brown days. Greg Boyeris a beast on the trombone. I suggest that you pick up any Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers cd, Monte. Soungs like you need a little Go-Go in your life.

Oh my God, for ONCE I agree with you...SCARY!!! smile

Very well put. Places closure to the points of many here. Mr. Boyer's playing is FUNKY, and therefore the theories of "cleanliness" in the technique don't apply. "Funk" is from the soul, and not on paper. He is the perfect addition to that horn section.

And, being a huge fan of the "horny" sounds in P's music, I love Greg's style of play.

The one thing I don't agree with you is Maceo, but that's for another time. smile

Interesting - I never had made the connection between Greg Boyer and Chuck Brown before.

Greg B is great.

Anyone who doesn't think so doesn't know what they are on about.

After the Mothership crashlanded in late 80s the PFunk AllStars horn section was recruited from a prominnent band in the Mid Atlantic (MD/VA/DC) called Uncle Remus. Greg Thomas on alto sax, Bennie Cowan trumpet/flugel horn and Greg Boyer on trombone.

Keep you eye on this live date from '91.

It features Funkadelic's "One NAtion" and Miles Davis "TuTu".

Thomas and Cowan can be found on most GAP Band tours when Clinton a is not out touring and I've seen Greg Thomas climb aboard with Maceo and pull a 2nd alto or even tenor.

i gotta say...I dig Maceo, candy and eric...and atlanta too...but i just don't like trombone solos...scuse me if I don't have a 'sound knowledge' of 'musicology...I may not know what i like---but i damn sure know what I don't like...p's music just doesn't suit 'trombone solos' IMHO...I turn the stereo down in the car whenever gregs solo's come in...especially on the aftershow cd...sorry greg..i am sure u r a master..just not my favourite flavour I guess...

I forwarded this thread to Sir Lieb of Funkadelia and he says:

Man, I can't BELIEVE this thread! Let's get some things straight, funkwise:

1) As Soulpower said, if Greg is funky enough for Dr. Funkenstein, Maceo and Prince, he damn well is funky enough for your and my ass. You DON'T go dissing P-Funk alumni unless you're a serious Sir Nose. Don't make me pull the Bop Gun on that ass. I WILL pull the Bop Gun on that ass. And yeah, if GC jumps in the water I'll damn well be jumping in too, 'cos us maggots can dance underwater and NOT GET WET. Good God. headbang

2) NO-ONE could ever make Fred sound outdated. Fred is beyond space & time in a total funkativity zone beyond the understanding of the brain, only comprehendible to the BOOTIES of specially designed afronauts. Hey Fred! Hey Fred! Hey Fred! FRED IS DEAD! NO HE AIN'T! Ain't it funky. headbang

3) Maceo is THE PERFECT sideman as he's amply demonstrated with Hard Working Mr Dynamite - uh. Good God. - Parliament-Fun-ka-de-lics, Bootsy's Rubber Band and indeed, Prince. Ungh. headbang

Now y'all better recognize and get off your sorry asses and jam before the mothership come to turn y'all out, BROTHERSUCKAS!
