OMG! I can't believe it! Dirty Mind is like an old friend. I remember sitting glued to the speakers listening for little things I hadn't noticed before. I would play the album before I left for school in the morning. I was such a Prince junky. I know I sound like a broken record but Dirty Mind was my "Leaves of Grass."

I've been playing this album pretty much non stop for the last few days. I think it was hearing Gotta Broken Heart Again on the DVD that made me seek out the original, and its hardly left the player since.

Im really loving Do It All Night and Sister at the moment, but for me my love for When You Were Mine never dies. This is his best song ever, I cant get enough of it.

All hail a great little album that you never have to skip a track on. Raw genius.

This is the debut of the real Prince. I love it! It's the album that was released the year I was born.

It's in my top 3. always will be. Dirty Mind, 1999 and SOTT are the jewels in his crown.

Being a fan since 92, I started listening to his music with the hits album, and Symbol, and Come. It actually took me a little time and effort before I really got into most of his eighties work- particularly Dirty Mind, Controversy, and 1999. Over time, however, they grew on me to where they are just as great as the best of his 90s music. Dirty Mind took the longest.

I didn't care for the very early raw synth sound on this album for many years. Despite that, once I had heard the title track and Uptown, I couldn't get it out of my head. I wasn't even sure if I liked those songs, but they wouldn't escape my mind for some time. It took me until '98 or so before Dirty Mind just blew me away. One day it just hit me for some reason. Now it is a favorite. A top ten Prince album- and his first masterpiece. I'm not sure why it took me so long to realize it, but I'm glad I do now.

Dirty Mind was Prince gone punk! 23 years and it still holds up as one of the finest and most rebellious albus ever made.

o-tay, it's testimonial time! grab yourself sumfin to drink, this'll be a while...

those of you here who know me well know how much i dig dirty mind...both the album and the entire era itself (more on this shit in a bit). this is the album that got me hooked on p totally. yeah, i knew about "when doves cry" and "u got the look" and all that but this is the album that got me. all because i wuz bored at my sister's house one day and had found her copy of the album she had on tape...wound up listenin to it...the rest is history.

i've always loved punk and new wave, as well as funk and r & b. p brought all the above genres and mixed 'em up marvelously for dm, so hearin this for the first time wuz like a breath of fresh air to me. i loveded it! prior to hearin it i hadn't heard anything else like it. 'twas wunnerful, y'know. though the album's been around for as long as i've been breathin, it wuz still super-fresh to me. still is.

another weird thing about hearin dm for the first time is that i had no idea what the album cover looked like (my sister must've lost the cassette case) till i started doin some research in my high school library--everyday durin my lunch hour you'd find me there, diggin amongst the archives of rolling stone and any other publication the library had that had any mention of prince from way back when. i found the album cover, as well as some pix of the stage attire p wore at the time...i wuz just like, "rock the fuck on!" as i became more proficient in my prince geekishness i kept findin out more and more about the album and what mindstate p wuz in when he did it.

this wuz pretty much p's very first epiphany, way before emancipation and all that chit. it wuz kinda a cross between coming-of-age and "fuck this popsy shit, i wanna let folks know what i'm really about!" i can only imagine how you old-skoolers felt when this album dropped, cuz it wuz one helluva turnaround from the first couple albums. the explicit lyrix, the trenchcoat n'drawerz, mussed-up hair....fuck high fashion, i love this shit!

also, one of the very first prince bootlegg videos that i got were the new york/paris shows from 1981...i still have the tape and i'm surprised that it hasn't broken in the 4 years i've had it, cuz i used to watch it every single day!!! both of those shows kick butt too (the new york show's my fave!)...man, it's just so strange that i have a prince album that dates me, y'know? in the past i've mentioned this album and folks would be like, "but it's so old!" and i'm like, "it came out the year i wuz born, so that must mean i'm ancient too, eh?"

but uh, there's my testimonial...in closing, i just wanna say that dm hasn't done anything like saved my life or whatever. it has, however, let me know that it is cool to not fit in with 'the norm' and made me feel super-empowered cuz of that. it's absolutely fine to be the squarest peg in a world of round holes. some will love you for it, some'll hate you for it.

in the end it all boils down to sumfin prince said at the time this came out:
i wasn't being deliberately provocative. i was being deliberately me.

While "For You" sounds immature and "Prince" offers a tease of things to come, Prince did not release a truly representative album until 1980's "Dirty Mind."

At the age of 22, Prince boldly went where no musician had gone before (or consequently has gone since). An unabashed tale of exhaustive raunch, "Dirty Mind" is the album where Prince became a freak. From the thumping bass line of the title track, Prince seduces the listener into the bonanza that follows. "If you got the time," Prince offers, "I'll give you some money to buy a dirty mind" in his signature falsetto.

What follows is the rock classic "When You Were Mine," whose status as a gem is ascertained by its inclusion on "The Hits/B-Sides" despite not being a single. The bizarre love triangle of the song is only a prelude to what is to follow.

"Do It All Night" is a straight-forward come-on, while "Gotta Broken Heart Again" offers the album's only hint of vulnerability.

The second side opens with Prince's first true masterpiece, "Uptown." While a geographic reference, "Uptown" transcends to become an abstract utopia of sexual and racial harmony- "black, white, puerto rican, everybody's just a-freakin'" he proclaims.

The next two songs form the core of the controversy that surrounded the album. Lil Kim and Foxy Brown are tame imitators of the vulgar display of sexual prowess detailed in "Head," in which Prince coaxes a virgin on her wedding day to give him oral sex, and "Sister," in which Prince details the fictitious libidinous accounts with his much older sister.

The album closes with a preview of what was to come. "Partyup" offers social commentary which became more prevalent on "Controversy." It closes with a rhyme not dissimilar to the "People call me rude..." chant on "Controversy," which offers a clue as to why the two albums are so often linked.

"Dirty Mind" is an uninhibited landmark of music that encapsulates the emergence of a superstar who would provide classic material for decades to come.

Uptown is where I wanna be!

I've been into this album ever since I discovered Prince
back in early 1988. So it's been rotating on and off for
over 15 years in my collection now. And I still like it
a lot. Especially with Prince being so clean now, it is
always nice to throw those old records onto the table and
just chuckle at the wild sexualy overtones oozing from it.

Dirty Mind is as Iv'e posted many times b4 one of my all time fav albums, simply because it's so raw...

Happy 19th year to me since i bought my 1st Prince album

Without a doubt one of his best ever albums.
