Prince returns to the Revolution

From MTV News

“Prince returns to the Revolution”
09.08.2003

Prince has let go the latest version of the New Power Generation. Let go were John Blackwell on drums, Renato Neto on keys, and Rhonda Smith on bass. Replacing them are Oliver Gene Lake on drums, Federico Gonzales Peña on keys, and Christian McBride on bass. Curiously two of the three had worked with Me’Shell NdegéOcello for over 10 years before being replaced recently. When contacted by MTV News, Ms. NdegéOcello’s new management said that they were not surprised by the hirings of Peña and Lake. “This was a positive move for Prince. It will be nice to finally see some players of his calibur in his band. Maybe finally having some talented musicians in those spots will turn his career around.”

Staying in the band will be Eric Leeds, Maceo Parker, and Sheila E.

When contacted by MTV News via email, Prince was talkative but to the point: “Eye got tired of hearing how my band sounded like ‘soft jazz’ & ‘uninspired’. Eye wanted 2 bring in some actual talent. Eye wanted 2 bring in some musicians that could actually expand on my music rather than just playing their parts & going through the motions. Eye also got tired of people saying how lame the name of ‘New Power Generation’ was, so Eye am going back 2 naming my band ‘The Revolution’. With the additions of Federico P, Oliver G, and Christian M, I finally have a band worthy of being called ‘The Revolution’.”

Shocked by the news of their departure, Renato Neto and Rhonda Smith were not happy about the change. “I know I didn’t cut it, but I figured he’d give me more time,” said Neto. “I knew I was in the band for no other reason than my looks, but this is disappointing. At least he’s replacing me with someone who can actually play,” said Smith. When contacted by MTV News, Blackwell’s publicist said that “John had a good time playing for the NPG and showing off his skills of drinking Mountain Dew while playing a drum solo.”

Prince had considered letting Sheila E. go for naming her new drumset “Bling Bling”, but decided that her talent outweighed her lack of imagination.

Prince’s publicist said in a press release that the changes will get Prince back to the funk of the early to mid 80s where he rarely used loops and began using more live drums. She said Prince was disappointed in the sound of the band after watching the recent DVD release of “Prince Live At The Aladdin.” It was rumored that Prince also fired his entire video production staff, as well as the designers of his graphic-intensive, zero-content official website NPGMC.com.

Prince’s attorney Jerry Blackwell announced in a separate release that fams (aka sheep) of the artist shouldn’t worry. Rhonda Smith, Renato Neto, and John Blackwell will be a part of the upcoming Family Jamm concert. It seems that all of Prince’s past associated artists are welcome to attend, however Blackwell said that Prince was disappointed to hear that a “Restraining Order” had been filed to keep both Larry & Tina Graham away from the concert. When contacted by MTV News, Sheila E. said “Just look at the effect The Grahams have had on Prince’s career. It’s a shame. We don’t need him affecting our concert like that. He’s a curse.” When asked if Prince was welcome to come to the concert Sheila said “Well, if he doesn’t show, we have other washed up artists like Tony M and TC Ellis who have agreed to appear.”

...and in other news, Courtney Love has announced that she will be taking up a long-term residency in Calcutta next month, so she can help needy children. "Selflessness is very important to me," Love said, in between long drags from her Lucky Strike unfiltered.

'NdegéOcello’s new management team' could use a spell check before they go to print so their comments appear credible.

This is just 2 weird... I know Frederico from my D.C days, and he IS about the BADDEST keyboard player around... He can play a piano, keyboard, and run a MOOG bassline at once... FUNKY. Versatile...
Gene Lake is the same caliber on drums.
I used to wonder why Prince didn't call up Frederico for keys...

BUT: I'm surprised whoever wrote this doesn't appeciate Renato's playing... not 2 mention John Blackwell and Rhonda. I mean... if U put Christian McBride, Freddie, and Gene Lake (or Sean Rickman) together, you'd have some of most smokin' jazz, funk, fusion... etc. in the world. So the reason this seemed strange to me, is because it was ALMOST believable... If it were to happen, you couldn't have picked better cats 2 play.
But AGAIN... I'm surprised with your musical "taste", that you're not happy with the current group.
Much love 2 Freddie and the DC crew, though!
PEACE>

Not wishing you any harm, but you could get in trouble for this if you're not careful! Besides, Rhonda is the best bass player Prince has ever had. wink

It amazes me how much time you spend fucking with Prince. You've got every right to be critical. But for God's sake, can't you be constructive? I've seen this shit posted 4 times on different websites for an intended laugh, I suppose. Since Meshell is your ace in the hole, why don't you spend time petitioning for a Meshell Music Club.
