Prince & House Music

I always thought it was a shame that Prince didn't explore this genre of music more.

I think stuff like Escape, The Line, Le Grind, Sex are all bordering on House.

There's some real 'Prince-ly' house tracks from the mid-80s such as Frankie Knuckles - 'Baby Wants To Ride' and Blake Baxter 'Sexuality' - It's not much of a stretch of the imagination to think that Prince could have produced music like this - I think '1999' had a bit of an unsung influence on House music.

I just listened to "Controversy." I'm trying to hear the "house" in it. Even tried some soul clapping myself...I don't know... The version on the "Hits/B-sides" is short. It's missing the chant: "People call me rude..." This is sorta house, I guess. smile I can't tell you how many times I chanted: "The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire/We don't need no water..." Y'all know the rest. smile

Okay, now I want to hear some real house music! dancing jig

I've been thinking Prince influenced house music 4 years now. Disco really spawned House, but P's influence added the "electronica" edge to it...

he should have explored the genre in the same way madonna did. he should have had the top house producers remixing his songs. can you imagine?

although there are several white label bootlegs house versions of several of his songs that are very good. my favorite is probably the take me with u house version and the kiss vs daft punk house version of kiss.

recently i found a house version/interpretation of the fathers song portion of computer blue which is pretty good.

anyway, i would have loved to seen MAW do a prince house remix.

i think junior vasquez did a house remix to thieves in the temple on the 12 inch.

I'd love to hear Prince's music get a complete house makover like Blondie did with "Remixed Remade Remodeled" back in 94. That is one hell of an album.

Soul Mechanik did a house/trance track using a Prince interview from the mid 80s, the song is called "I'll Call U" I think...

It appears on a Nick Warren mix CD, as well as a Danny Tenaglia "Back 2 Basic" compilation.

i agree.
i doubt it will happen though.
hell prince better be glad he never put acapella mixes of his songs on his 12 inches or you know every cut would have a bootleg house remix.

There's a lot of house mixes of Prince songs coming out the last couple of years, most of them white labels and bootleg vinyls. i have some of 'em:

Controversy (white), Erotic City (Supafly), When Doves Cry (white), Sexy Dancer vs Maxwell, Gett Off, Round And Round (Tevin Campbell), I Would Die 4 U...etc.

Great crowd reaction every time, people still love those funky Prince tunes! Even younger people and dj's who don't know the songs ask me what music is this, really.

That's another pet peeve of mine, that there are so few remixers of Prince songs.

The extended versions are fantastic, magical - but compared to other artists of his era, Prince has so few remixes done by outside people.

I remember the Purple Medley having house-styled arrangements to Prince's hits. I also liked the Gett Off house mix. I just wish there was a house remix of Sexy Dancer.

I love the house mix of Gett off..it was done by chicago House pioneer Steve silk Hurley. Also, Cats rap in Cindy C was actaully borrowed from a Steve silk Hurly/Jm silk House song called Music is the key.

On a side note...does anyone know the House song wich used a price sample...the sample is "black White Puerto Rican everybody justa feekin"? I need this house record in a bad way...it was from the mid 90's.

"All the Critics Love U In New York" has been discussed as a precursor to house/techno by myself and others. "Digital Garden" is a good track too. "Get Off" (NPG B-side) is a "groove" track as well.

I also think that "17 Days," "Life Can Be So Nice," "Girl," "Ballad of Dorothy Parker," "Private Joy," "Sexy Dancer," and many others could be remixed well.

Maybe that's what it's called now, but old school house, that deep house, I wouldn't call that techno. (But, I'm no authority.) I read this really insightful article on house music the other day, just wish I could remember the link. sad

Deep House (original Us house) is what we're talking about, songs like Sexy Dancer were played in the early house clubs in Chicago.

I agree! They once called Blake Baxter the 'Prince of Detroit techno'.

And you're right again, some songs of 1999 sound very house: the synth lines, the claps, the voice etc. But it's not that surprising since a lot of those early house producers were Prince fans (Felix da Housecat etc.).

The house mix of "Gett Off" kicks ass! It takes me back to the days of real house music in the US. What they call house now... shrug it's like Forrest Gump's box o' chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

And I always thought that was Sheila E doing that "music is the key" rap. boxed

There was a wicked 12" out in the UK recently called 'The Bootleg Of Dorothy Parker'. Don't know who was responsible but going by the professionalism of the sleeve & the remix, I think it is probably the work of known producers. I know Xpress2 dropped it b4 it surfaced in the shops, so they are prime suspects in my notebook.

The problem with alot of the bootleg mixes out now is that they don't have access to the raw tracks so they pile on layers of sounds to drown out the original music, or worse yet, try to extract his vocals which produces really shoddy results.

Barely.

New World has a kind of raw charm, The Human Body is a bit of an interesting oddity, but kinda shows how little Prince knows about the genres of dance music.
