We Can Funk appreciation thread.

Graffiti Bridge has to be one of his most under-rated albums.

Sure, it has some crap (I think it'd be much stronger if the collaborations were ditched and it were a solo album) but when it shines, it shines much brighter than most of his nineties albums. We Can Funk, Joy In Repetition, Thieves In The Temple and The Question Of U being the highlights...

Lets hear some love for We Can Funk.

Hearing this released version on headphones is not bad either..you can hear the back ground ethereal "ahh ahhhs" rising to a cresecendo that's kind of spine tingling with Prince ending it with a scream-a-thon etc...and plus his coda speech during it all is kinda slick too...of course the orginal is excellent as well but this one gets dogged too much for not being th e orignal version

this is the only album i can honestly say i dont really like !

like u said there are some great songs on they'r but the album just doesnt work 4 me, weak tracks being...

new power generation
tick tick bang
graffiti bridge
new power generation II

then take away the assoc artists , and your left with...
cant stop...
elephants...
the question...
thives in...(1 of p's poorest singles)
still would...
joy in rep...
we can funk (poor version compared 2 the bootleg version)

funny how a lot of people slate this album because the other artists r on it as well !, i remember when purple rain was out, there was a lot of talk bout how the other artists should have been on it as well !if they had been who knows...???

still its all about opinions !

I love "We Can Funk", To me The whole Graffiti Bridge album and movie were great. The movie had a great message too it (something tells me i've already posted something like this on a thread, Oh what the hell:yawn:). Right after i finally decided to get the movie, I ordered the album off of www.amazon.com like a week later

But like i said, I can't really pick a favorite song off of the album/movie because they are all my favorites

Yeah, because have of the songs he recorded before 1990. That's why they sound so go! I know at least "JIR" was recorded on the same day or week he recorded "SOTT" and "The Cross" back in 86'!

We Can Funk is the only reason I haven't made that CD into a coaster. It's the joint!

I feel you, dude. I love those background vocals on that track. But I gotta say, I give P props for writing a tune like "Round 'N Round". Little girls in the neighborhood were makin' dance routines to that song. The combination of lil' Tevin Campbell (years before he was out soliciting sex) and P's background vocals is pretty cool.

Graffiti Bridge and Tick Tick Bang are both smooth tracks. Thieves in the Temple is the weak link here. Along with all the other crap like round and round, and melody cool

Round And Round is crap? Song sounds like a classic Jackson Five joint.

The damn drum machine program is so great, it alone is worth it.

Melody Cool is great. Great lyrics and beautiful music.

Thieves In The Temple is a classic single, up there with When Doves Cry.

Heres the bottom line: WCF was an awesome song. By far one of the deepest tracks Prince has ever produced. HOW-FUCKING-EVER the GB version sucks gaint-green-rhino-balls!!! George Clinton murders this song. By far the best version of WCF is on the remastered DREAM FACTORY bootleg. Prince and the band playing this track in the studio give the tune a very funky/bluesy feel to it. It surpasses the GB copy in every aspect. And Miko Weavers solo at the end of the track is to die for!!! END OF STORY.

Damn, why is almost everyone hatin' on the GB/released version??? It's funky as hell, y'all!!! I love the original one, too, but the released one is hot to death as well!!! Especially towards the end with the screaming and the rising & building crescendo towards the very end!! There should be enough love for both versions, IMHO.
