Prince is an incredible bassist. First at all, he can play slap bass as a master (for example Emancipation) and he has drawn incredible lines with the bass like in "Let's have a baby". And what I like the most: his marvellous sense of rhythm, that is something that you can't learn.

I love that so much. me2! Yeah, he never used the bassline he's shown playing in that clip. On a side note, if you listen really carefully, you'll notice that there is no 'bassline' on Partyman. What you think is the bass is actually 'singing' the bassline and then processing the vocal sound to make it 'bassy' sounding.

I dig P's style. It's all so rhythmic. He uses multiple basslines in songs, too, which I dig.The "climax bass solo" is very indicative of that rhythmic style. "I'm a pig..so,magic elixir I swill"

Prince is more versatile on Bass than people credit him 4. Also, he has his own style of Funk, with all those greasy rythmic grace notes. Let's Work. A lot of full-time Bass players haven't been able to nail that line down.
I'll say it again... On Prince's guitar, bass, drums and keys... if you made someone listen 2 his playing, without knowing it's Prince, they'd B trippin'. Peace. G. "He's a musician's musician..."

I used to think Prince was only good for a bit of slapping and soloing on bass... coz that is mostly what you see live. But then you hear the bass on Alphabet St... and the video of the Partyman bass solo... and you realise that he is pretty f*cking good
I used to teach bass semi-professionally, and played as a session player for some years... and I'd rate Prince pretty highly. Not that my opinion is more valid than anyone else's, but I for one sure appreciate his bass skills. Of course, Prince has always had the common sense to surround himself with great talent - having Larry Graham or Sonny Thompson in the band... well these guys are great bassists in their own right and probably a lot better technically than Prince.

Clever bloke is our Prince.

Listen to the way he abuses the bass in "DMSR". He punishes it!

As a former bassist and music lover, I would say Prince is an above average player with a groove that is worth more than gold... Anybody can play after enough teaching, in the pocket grooving is a natural instinct... bootsy had it, bernard from chic had it, Prince has it.
If you all want a great album to hear some great bass in a good song structure check out Victor Wooten's A show of Hands. Beautiful melodies... and he is the monster in the bass world... Prince grooves... I love to see him jam out. Music is the best...

He DID use that bassline but it's only on the 'Purple Party Mix' of that track and unfortunately it's very low in the mix.
