CNNBREAKINGNEWS said: around 25? It depends how you define this, but more than 25.
Are you strictly talking about the bands that he formed to record with or those band members that performed live the music he had largely previously recorded with little collaboration under his own name(s)? Do you also include the horn sections? Dancers? DJs? What about those artists that have performed on and off with him e.g. Najee? Candy Dulfer? Do you include under 'bands of Prince' those performers in bands which he formed as vehicles for his own music: Madhouse? The Family? The Time, even?? The list is considerable and there's an argument to be made for some or all of these (and others too): Gayle Chapman Bobby Z Matt Fink Andre Cymone Dez Dickerson Lisa Coleman Brownmark Wendy Melvoin Miko Weaver Eric Leeds Matt Blistan Wally Safford Jerome Benton Greg Brooks Shiela E Levi Seacer Jr Boni Boyer Cat Glover Rosie Gaines Tommy Barbarella Tony M Damon Dickson Kirk Johnson Michael Bland Sonny T Diamond Pearl DJ William Graves Mayte NPG Hornz / Hornheadz Estaire Godinez Kat Dyson Rhonda Smith Marva King Mike Scott DJ Dudley D Larry Graham Geneva Kip Blackshire Najee Renato Neto Greg Boyer Maceo Parker Candy Dulfer I've ignored members of other bands, and left out his hairdresser, Phillip, who appeared as a keyboard player in Graffiti Bridge (the film)! .
