Poll: Worst cover song Prince has done

Now, I think when Prince redoes someone else's song, he USUALLY does a great job and makes it better than the original. Which I hardly believe most artists do. Now, what do you think is the worst song Prince has covered?

I'd have to say, Sheryl Crow's Everyday Is A Winding Road. It seems way overproduced. I also remember at one of the Celebrations, one of Prince engineers was asked what was the songs that took him the longest to finish on Rave In2 and he mentioned Everyday is A Winding Road. I did like his live version better than the studio one.

Wow, I didn't think he butchered Betcha by golly wow at all. I have the original and I think he did a pretty good job. Oh well, to each his/her own!

When he changed the word slob to slave, it fucked it up for me AND Prince doesn't need to do covers, he's better than that.

Definitely. Prince's versions are sickening. barf

As for "One of Us" Prince breathed more life into that song-- he made a good song better. As far as "I Can't Make You Love Me" I like Prince's version but it isn't better than the original. I've never heard Sheryl Crow's "Everyday Is A Winding Road" so I can't speak about that.

I'll go with "La La La Means I Love You" though I hear when he does it live it's quite good.

His best cover version imo is "When Will We Be Paid".

Winding Road is the only cover he's done that really sucks. All the covers on Emancipation are pretty good...One of Us is a highlight on the album imo.

Nah, Winding Road was a kickin version. Hell, anything that could better that fetted Sheryl Crow version is something good.

Betcha By Golly Wow was done almost note for note as the original, so I do not get Dansa's gag reflex. lol. Actually, Christgau thought the cover tunes were the best things on Emancipation.

The original version of LA La La is a bit old fashioned and out of date, so Princes version is a vast improvement. Much more soulful and less cute. P's falsetto is amazing in this. Dansa gets a hand sammich for that comment. lol

My pic for worst is another Emancipation cover tune; the awful rendering of the great Bonnie Raitte song, I Can't Make You Love Me. barf Princes version is really lazy, and he seems to show no real emotion in his performance, unlike the soulful Raite version.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

My vote goes to "La, La, La (Means eye Love U)". That song is like sugarcoated honeydripped sweet and makes me ill just thinking about its existence.

Eew, what WAS he thinkin'?!

Same here, I thought Prince's version was much better. I wasn't big into the synth line he put in there, but it started growing on me smile

prince may have had the falsetto down (sorta), but he still turned a great song into hot garbage. cover songs are definitely not p's forté. he's much better doin his own compositions than doin other people's stuff.

It was an awful song to start, in my opinion, and Prince only slightly improved it. Plus, he loses 5 stars for making it seem like "Love...They Will Be Done" at the beginning. mad

He really did tear it up on guitar. Totally hilarious the way he mumbled through the words, though.

He did the same gibberish with Honky Tonk Woman too.

One Of Us is a great cover, peeps. I said it.

I have to say that I didn't like Prince including cover versions
on his albums. Most of the covers were ok, but none of them
were great. He should have done an album of cover versions
as part of his WB 'contract filling' in '94, instead of putting the
odd cover version on subsequent albums.
