that's the track order that has appeared on the bootleg.
Though the track order listed by Uptown differs slightly, they list it as... 1. Visions 2. Dream Factory 3. Train 4. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker 5. It 6. Strange Relationship 7. Starfish & Coffee 8. interlude 9. Slow Love 10. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man 11. Sign O' The Times 12. A Place In Heaven 13. Crystal Ball 14. The Cross 15. Last Heart 16. Witness 4 The Prosecution 17. Movie Star 18. All My Dreams Personally, I think Uptown's tracklist is the correct one. As for the versions of the tracks used on the album, most of the songs differ slightly to the officially released versions in some way.

yes, the two listed above are both slightly differently ordered versions of the 3rd and final incarnation of Dream Factory. The 2 earlier versions are as follows... April 1986 version: 1. Visions 2. Dream Factory 3. It's A Wonderful Day 4. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker 5. Big Tall Wall 6. And That Says What? 7. Strange Relationship 8. Teacher Teacher 9. Starfish & Coffee 10. A Place In Heaven 11. Sexual Suicide June 1986 version: 1. Visions 2. Dream Factory 3. It's A Wonderful Day 4. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker 5. It 6. Strange Relationship 7. Teacher Teacher 8. Starfish & Coffee 9. guitar interlude 10. In A Large Room With No Light 11. interlude: nevaeh ni ecalp a 12. Sexual Suicide 13. Crystal Ball 14. Power Fantastic 15. Last Heart 16. Witness 4 The Prosecution 17. Movie Star 18. A Place In Heaven 19. All My Dreams .

As for the versions of the tracks used on the album, most of the songs differ slightly to the officially released versions in some way. "Nevaeh ni ecalp a" and "interlude" are segues, even UPTOWN mentions the "interlude" and the other track as songs. It's just that the handwritten setlist from Susan Rogers does does have these segues written down and it's not entirely accurate either. Clearly the "interlude" was played before "I.C.N.T.T.P.O.Y.M." and not "Slow Love" as written. I can assure they are legit. "Waiting to be banned"

True, the segues would never have been credited on the
finished album, had it been released. As for the slight discepancies in the track order between Uptown's listing and the bootleg, that's a tricky one. I'm more inclined to believe Uptown's order, since it derives from the Susan Roger's sequencing list made at the time of mastering. The bootleg may be a legitimate track order, but it's clear listening to it that it's been 'assembled' rather than being a continous recording of a copy of the original source material (there are many differences in 'tape hiss' and quality between songs).

I just don't see Prince putting four upbeat songs as the closer of the album. He would have at least put a ballad in next to last song. I like the Sabotage line up better

Do you guys think The Dream Factory is Worse, As Good, or Better than Sign O The Times? They obviously are both very strong albums, but do you think he damaged Dream Factory by taking out the Wendy & Lisa songs or strengthened SOTTs? Personally I still like SOTTs since it has a bit more r&b/soul to it (Adore, Hot Thing, If I Was Your Girlfriend). But of course I do miss All My Dreams, Moviestar, & In A Large Room...

Dream Factory is the BEST Prince / the Revolution / the NPG album ever! "So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.

Not true...it has not been assembled or put together. That is the last configuration of Dream Factory you can find on bootleg. It's a legit configuration as is the cassette it came from, the reason you hear differences in hiss and quality is that the bootleg was mastered from track to track. It was not mastered as a whole cassette but mastered from track to track as needed. The original cassette is totally legit, but the bootleg mastered each song to what was required and assembled. Maybe so, but there are quite a few anomalies on the boot. The quality varies so much between certain tracks, and there a many points where tracks fade out where they don't sound like they should (the guitar segue fades off in a strange place, and Witness 4 The Prosecution & Movie Star don't segue together when they should). I wish whoever's got this original cassette would make a better boot of it.

While 'the Dream Factory' project is quite intriguing,I think I prefer the 'SOTT' album, whcih is ultimately what it evolved into. Some of the DF songs are long and meandering ("All My Dreams","Crystal Ball",etc). The 'SOTT' tracklist just seems more focused and to the point. Most fans will disagree with me,but I also think it was a wise idea to trim the 'Crystal Ball' project down to two records instead of three.

my 2. That segue might be "Nevaeh Ni Ecalp A". It's possible somebody made something, someone did upload a different version of this interlude. "Waiting to be banned"

You also hear that shril whistle. Might i suggest you pick up the Sabotage version. Trust me "Waiting to be banned"

That would account for the discrepancy between Susan Rogers' list and the sequence that appeared on the cassette, and may account for the reason the bootleg tracks had to be 'mastered' individually.

Might i suggest you pick up the Sabotage version. Trust me Ahhh... I see! (it all becomes clearer now) I shall have to keep my eye out for that one In that case it sounds like both tracklists are probably correct, and that Prince decided to swap some of the songs around before commiting it to reference tape. It's certainly happened before on other albums, Adore and Beautiful Night changed places several times during the evolution of Crystal Ball and Sign O' The Times.

It's also worth noting that Dream Factory was never actually
completed. All we have is the final configuration made before the album was shelved. It's highly likely that it would have undergone at least a few more minor changes had it actually been released.

It is possible, anything is possible...i've said all along that there is SEVERAL configurations of that album in existance. Not just what Susan Rogers has documentation to or her handwritten tracklists. But the information i have it that it is the final configuration of the album and is a cassette dub. The bootleg point is a little different. Each track off the cassette was mastered individually as you have to treat each track as an individual. One track may require more work then another, at least that is my understanding. "Waiting to be banned"

Not quite...it was mastered by a professional who just happens to be a fan. It's generally accepted the Sab bootleg has the best overall quality for this DF album + the best artwork. "Waiting to be banned"

DF version - 2:11, Eroica version - 2:19. The only difference between them is that the DF version fades off after the final note, whereas the Eroica one does not. Other than this minor difference it's identical.

and that Prince decided to swap some of the songs around before commiting it to reference tape. It's certainly happened before on other albums, Adore and Beautiful Night changed places several times during the evolution of Crystal Ball and Sign O' The Times. That's true. According to Turn It Up 2.0 (or was it Days of Wild? I'm not that good at remembering which book said what) tracklistings with slight differences in the order of songs were made for Dream Factory vol.3, so both the Sabotage and Susan Rogers tracklists are legit. I assume the tracklist as it appears on the Sabotage release is one that made Prince think that some of the songs would be better off if placed differently. Certainly Interlude works better before Slow Love than before I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, and Movie Star works better before All My Dreams because it ends with snoring - going to dreamland, natch. Personally, I think Dream Factory vol.2 is much more fun to listen to as it contains more songs that involves The Revolution - it was more of a Prince And The Revolution album than vol.3 - and it contained more songs which did not end up on Sign O' The Times, but remain unreleased. Listening to vol.3 isn't that different from listening to Sign O' The Times as a lot of the songs are the same (if not the same versions, but still...) So if Prince should ever decide to make an official release of The Dream Factory (like he did The Black Album), I hope he opts to release vol.2. Now, vol.3 has been released from Sabotage, but is there any release like that of vol.2 out there? (Because I would love to have that as well. I only have a tape of the second half.)
