Sandra St Victor's Strange Attitude..

Liquid Assets - BBC.
During this program (which was repeated in the UK 2nite) Sandra St Victor comes across very strangely I think - in such a way that Im not that convinced she's telling the whole truth about her tussle over the song 'Soul Sanctuary'
What u guys think?
Also thought her overwrought, warbling rendition of it hugely erm, 'entertaining'
eyepop lol

thats a nice way of saying her take on Soul Sanctuary was godawful ,which it was , she should be grateful Prince took her average little song and turned it into something really beautiful.

Prince's Millions has now been added to my
Prince Live website, which I've updated just today.
Check out Chocadelica , updated with Lotusflow3r and MPLSound album lyrics April 2nd 2009 :

THANKU MOONSHINE!
Didnt u think she came across a little strangely?
Her body lanuguage when she talked about the song writing credit issue etc seemed really self conscious etc - she was just plain odd.

Okay...some of ya'll think that "she should be grateful Prince took her average little song and turned it into something really beautiful."

Number one..if you were a songwriter, musician...and Prince wanted to work with you...you sat around for a few hours, came up with some shit...Prince puts out an album with YOUR SONG on it...and doesnt give you ANY credit!!?!? How the fuck can you say "oh...i should be grateful because he used my song"...what kind of craziness it that?!?!

I'm sure that some of our musicians here will back me up on that...

Number two...the shit is just wrong...

Even though he sent her a "check"...a little check...this was AFTER she contacted his lawyer about it... rolleyes

I really can't believe the way some of you FAMS think!!

I agree. Another example of an artist that has no where near the success that they had when they worked with Prince - but then claim that all of it was due to their contribution and Prince steals it from them. When Sandra produces an album - or a song - that can come anywhere close to Emancipation or any other Prince album, I will listen to that story. I love her - have all her albums. Prince makes her better - period.

Consider Prince is so voracious about people asking him for permission to use his songs etc... you'd think he would have got her permission to do the song on Emancipation.

Yeah she definately seemed really moody.
Her version though sounds totally different and not very good. He did most of the rearraging and at least she got a credit and a small cheque

Ok,I might ruffle a few feathers by saying this,but...

I'm getting sick and tired of these people always claiming that "Prince stole my song" or "He didn't give me any credit for this song" blah blah blah.Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you write a song, you're supposed to get it copyrighted, right? That way, nobody can just "steal" it from you.And if you decide to share it with another artist, you need to make it clear FROM THE BEGINNING what their intentions are,and how much credit you are gonna receive. Are they gonna change your words around? How much of your original song are they gonna actually use? Agree on this beforehand and there would be no problems.Or,are these whiny people just afraid of Prince?

I'm not just referring to Sandra either.I'm talking about Tony M and Levi (who sued Prince),his sister Lorna (who claimed that "U Got The Look" was based on her lyrics) and all those other folks who constantly bitch that Prince somehow "stole" their song and idea.

(waiting to get cussed out by those who may disagree...lol)

I remember her getting credit for that song..she is mentioned (and therefore credited) in the Emancipation booklet that came in the CD set. She is also credited by Prince in his interview with Spike Lee...what more credit does she need?

I guess she would have liked to have been consulted before the song materialised on Emancipation. It would have been nice to just ask for permission.

Also no doubt she wants more cash smile

Ah well. As DavidEye said, she really should have registered her copyright before showing the song to Prince, or anyone. Doesn't excuse Prince just taking it outright though.

Just sounded like another case of sour grapes to me. If prince hadn't put it on Emancipation (and credited it) no one would even know that the song existed. It's a pretty nice song, she should be happy people got to hear her lyrics. Although I have to say that her rendition was close to horrendous!

Interesting... so do you feel that Prince has a right to profit from her music, and release it without her consent... and that she should just be thankful that her song is being heard?

Funny because that sounds like precisely the sort of thing that Prince used to bitch about on his L4OA and NPGMC missives...

Sandra is well respected from her Family Stand days and is very talented. I personally enjoyed her performance of the original version.

Oh get a grip, she did say some nice things about him as well, but as far as this song was concerned she had some issues with the man. Can you really blame her?

There's so much wrong with this. GET INFORMED. The song WAS copyrighted. There's FIVE of these Sandra songs where he pulled that shit, in one case even "forgetting" to co-credit the other authors. Sandra was 100% right in being pissed off, especially since this happened at a time Prince was babbling about artists' rights and was abusing a press conference to complain about Santana using a "la la la" on his album that sounded a bit like a "la la la" on a GCS album track. The Sandra St. Victor (who BTW isn't a nobody but a very respected artist) "incident" is mirrored by dozens of the same stories of Prince nicking stuff without owning up.

Check this out:

http://pr1nc3.com/news/whowrotethis.asp

Sandra's story is 100% backed up by the FACTS.

And the tale about the little cheque makes me think: what about those covers Prince had on Emancipation, that he boasted about paying the authors (which is baloney, you don't pay the authors, you pay the guys who own the rights -- and if you think that's wrong, why didn't the authors of the songs keep the rights for themselves)?

i looked on your website, it says the song is copyrighted, with prince as a co writer on all of it. so shouldnt she have gotten paid anyway, but not through prince? plus, if he sent her a cheque, then basically wasnt he legally obliged to send her the full rightful amount, and if he didnt why didnt she do something about it? why did she just stop even though she was in the "right"? plus how come on one bit a write is "the artist formerly known as prince" yet really it should have been prince, cos alex hahn says you cant change your name to a symbol, thus prince never actually changed his name legally?

also, that liquid assets programme was shit and i swear there were a fuckload of inaccuracies!! and im english and the sense of humour still bugged me!! also, finally, she does get credit, on the album notes, for the lyrics, which prince even praises! guess he didnt mention the music though!

The bottom line is this: if she did not get what she think she was due for that song, why did she settle for a "teeny little" check and then go away?

Maybe she was tired of the whole situation, didn't have the money to battle Prince, who knows. Sometimes you just need to cut your losses and move on.
