Prince Taking Celebration To The People

Never one to let the party die down, Prince is extending this week's "Prince: A Celebration" event into a North American tour.

The artist will kick off the trip June 21 in Columbus, Ohio, after a week of parties and concerts at his Paisley Park compound that will culminate with two shows in St. Paul, Minnesota (see "Erykah Badu, Nikka Costa To Play Prince Shindig").

At recent shows on his "Hit and Run" tour, Prince and his band NPG have played a mix of hits and rarities from throughout his 23-year recording career — from such early tunes as 1980's "Uptown" to Purple Rain-era hits like "When Doves Cry" and such fan favorites as Sign o' the Times' "Adore." Prince will release The Rainbow Children later this year.

Prince Cancels Remainder Of Tour

Those planning to celebrate with Prince this month will have to wait. The artist canceled the remainder of his "Prince: A Celebration" tour on Tuesday but plans to mount an even larger tour later this summer.

No reason was given for the scrubbing of the tour's remaining 16 dates, according to Prince's publicist. The tour was scheduled to run through an August 5 show in Anchorage, Alaska.

Prince played a handful of dates in the Midwest and Canada before calling off the tour following his July 6 appearance at the Montreal Jazz Festival.

You never know - with Prince lowering the club membership price - maybe he may do the same with concert tickets. If marketed as an instrumental only tour - and the price is reasonable - a broader audience may come - and he may expand his retail base.
