"ENDORPHINMACHINE"...oh hell yea!

lol This jam is my wake up tune! music Love the energy in this song and the way he screams thru-out it! headbang I've learned to like it because when I first heard it I was like "Yea, okay, Prince." rolleyes But as I played the "Gold" album more and more (one of my fav's), "Endorphinmachine" hit me hard one day. I think it was after the line "Press 1 4 the money...press 2 4 the dream...then get ready 4 something you've never seen..." headbang

This song always reminds me of Aerosmith for some reason. And that's not completely a bad thing. wink

I love Endorphinmachine, it's a great rocker.
Always reminds me of the Gold Tour shows, where he opened
the set with this song.

The original version is the only one worth bothering with. The version on TGE with cowbells, synths, sirens and helicopters (okay I made that last one up) is just too crap for words smile

Agreed. The original version sounds more raw and less polished than the version that ended up on 'TGE'.

I always felt that Endorphinmachine shoulda been the first track on TGE. Pussy Control's cool but could have worked better later on in the album.

Yeah, I have to agree...
When I first heard the version of Endorphinmachine on TGE
I was disappointed. I didn't mind the sirens so much (he'd
already started adding them to live renditions), but all
the extra synth bits really lessened the 'rock factor' of
the song. The original version that appeared on the earlier
configurations of 'Come' was a lot better.

WHen I hear piunks complaining about Prince music in the 90s, I point to Endorphine Machine - or that entire album. It is one of his best ever.

The version of Endorphinmachine on TGE is still great tho!
(even if the original version is a bit better).

The Gold Experience was definitely one of the highpoints
in Prince's career. A great diverse album that really
showcased a lot of Prince's musical styles to great effect.

Ironically the only time I didnt enjoy hearing Endorphinmachine was when I saw Prince (but when he was prince) live at the Sheffield Arena, UK in 1995. Prince came out 2 it but not be4 the crowd were witnessed 2 a video monatage of clips of classic Prince videos, clips from Purple Rain etc whilst Purple Medley was being played over the speakers. Then Prince announced "Sheffield, (with 2 sylables like some people pronounce it!) this is NOT a Prince party, this is NOT a Prince party.
The NPG struck up playing Endorphinmachine and Prince came out of that stage thingy U can see on the case of The Gold Experience on a conveyor belt rockin' on his guitar. As exciting as it was, when Prince began 2 sing, I couldnt help feeling a twinge of sadness. This was becuz Id felt Prince had changed a great deal and I thought 2 myself 'hmm, this isnt the kinda music I loved Prince 4'. Considering the whole saga over The Gold Experience non of the crowd had heard the majority of the tracks prince and the NPG played and most people went away dissapointed from the reactions after the show. We were only treated 2 familiar songs from Come, The Most Beautiful Girl in the world and 7. Interestingly enough, he also played I love U in me. Being a Prince fan and being familiar with the majority of the set list, I di enjoy the show however, I wondered how those people felt who came 2 see Prince based on his reputation as an outstanding live artist felt. This was the 2nd time I had seen him, the 1st time being the Act II tour 2 years earlier, where Prince virtually played everything. That concert was the greatest and most exciting Id ever seen 2 date. However this time around, Prince seemed 2 be writing borish and obvious music I felt at the time.
However back 2 the point in hand, I do really like EndorphinMachine as a song and The Gold Experience 4 that matter!

I LOVE Endorphinmachine! That riff...man, SO rock n roll. Having said that, I have a few questions that I hope someone will answer. #1 What is the whole "Gold Experience Saga/Controversy" I keep hearing about? And #2 Where is the original version of E*Machine available?

Warner Brothers refused 2 release The Gold Experience when Prince desired due 2 the fact it would have been 2 soon after Come (was it Come, cant remember?). So he got all narky about it, hence the name change and the 'slave' scrawled on his cheek.

The tracks from Come and the Gold Experience were mostly
recorded roughly around the same time. A lot of the
tracks swapped between the albums several times before
they were eventually released (as well as tracks that
ended up on Chaos And Disorder). At one point it looked
like most of the tracks would be on a 2 or 3 CD set
called 'The Dawn'. Various EP's and CD configurations
came and went before The Gold Experience took shape.
Come was reduced to a 10 track album of the more 'solo'
material, whereas The Gold Experience showcased the
band, and was supposed to convey the feeling of a 'live'
concert, with all the tracks having that 'full band'
sound and a proper ending (no fades). The rawer version
of Endorphinmachine originates from a couple of earlier
configurations of what became the Come album. There's a
particularly good sequence which has Come, Endorphinmachine
and Space all segueing seamlessly together. You can still
hear the remnants of this sequence on the released version
of Endorphinmachine. The drum fill and chord change that
kick off the song (before the riff starts) were only really
there to bridge the key change between Come and Endorphin
machine, and the held synth chords after the finale are
part of the intro to space.

Thanks for the great info Boris. I never knew about all this shizzle and LOVE both records (Come and Gold). Gotta get up and look into that. How'd you find out about it?
