Remember back when Prince was the muuufuggin' man? I just saw the video for Take Me With U (live form the Purple Rain tour), and it just took me back to the days when Prince was THE MAN!!!
That isn't to say he isn't the man now, but I liked the old school days back when his "man factor" was at an all-time high. For those of us (like myself) who miss those days, I say, don't fret. We'll always have the memories. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Trust me ! Prince is Still the Man. Not a Damn thing has changed and he ain't old and he ain't over and he's still fabulous and he's just doing different music and trying different things. I used to feel like yeah I want the old days of Prince back and all but you know what? Prince has changed with the times and he looks great for 45 and you know this Muff is still Crazy about him. Rest Assured Prince is and will always be the Man! Don't Nobody take that Away from him and Bless him but nobody Can.

Yeah, guys, I hear you. But the truth is we're never gonna see something as great as Purple Rain or Dirty Mind or 1999. Yeah, he's changed now, but I can't say that it's for the better. But I guess that's the thing about change. You can't stay the man forever. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

are you speaking of popularity? because as far as music is concerned i think the rainbow children is miles above purple rain. 1999 and dirty mind are comparable to trc, i think, because they were attempting something new. even if you don't dig the spiritual message, the music is still equal to that of 1999 or DM, at least in my opinion.

I don't think it has to do with his popularity, per se. It's more about his "man factor". Sure, TRC's music was the strongest he's done in a while, but face it, he's gone off the deep end here. I miss the rebelliousness. And as an advocate of all that is Punk/New Wave/Alternative that's what made him the coolest to me. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

i get what you're saying. i guess i look at the idea of rebelliousness differently than you. when i think of rebellious behaviour in music, i think of something that goes against the rules or carves its own way or makes some kind of new statement. even if i don't agree with it, i can stand back and say "damn, so and so is doing their own thing...cool!". well, that is how i feel about prince these days. in an age where almost every other song on the radio has to get beeped or edited, it is a huge statement for prince to be taking a stand against that. he could be making music that is what the market wants. he could be writing about bitches and hoes. he could be perpetuating some kind of phony image. instead, he does his own thang...even if it pisses off a lot of fans (including myself)...and doesn't chase after gap commercial deals and radio payola in order to be heard. but, in the end, that is just Prince...being The Man.

Yeah, I rememeber when all the "purple fakers", critics, and real fans liked him. They're great memories, and that work does get recognized (for the most part). I rememeber when he was one of the biggest commercial stars, that was cool. But you can only stay on top for so long, hell, there's even Madonna backlashes going on now.
A lot of the artists that were loved and popular aren't so loved and popular anymore, it's natural, times change, people's opinions change, styles/fads change. and only the people who chase those changing things stay on top for a long time To me he's still pretty much the same stubborn, rebellious, weird, don't-give-a-damn artist we've all come know and (for some) love. He's still rebelling, he's still not being part of the crowd. All he did was take away the sex, other than that, he's still doing the same (new) thing. And think about it, if he was still doing the sex thing, he really wouldn't be too different, now would he? It may have been inovative and stuff in the 80s, but it's pretty much the run of the mill now. anyway, yeah, I remember when he was the man---to the majority. Good times [This message was edited Tue Aug 19 22:00:54 PDT 2003 by lovebizzare] ~KiKi

I agree with you 100% and well you know he was all into the Sex when he was really young and the lyrics and the music just show you how he has MATURED and Changed and that he has more Important things or just a Different Direction in which he is travelling. Listen you just Cannot compare what he did back in the 70s,80s or 90s. Prince HAS Changed and so has the Music. Real fans will not Abandon him ever and be as crazy about him Now as they once were. I Totally Understand where he is at. Listen, I and all of us if we are Fans must RESPECT him and his Direction and stand behind him 100%.

He's still rebellious, he's just not rebelling against what you want him to rebel against. And he's now more alternative than he's ever been. It takes more effort than ever before to keep up with when and where he's releasing his music, and the content of his material is certainly alternative to the status quo. Being a part of the zeitgeist is temporary for everybody. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
