The Avenue video

I just received this.I was like a child watching this!!Mesmerized I was.

Ok,I was shocked at how close the crowd was to him.I was shocked at how small the stage was.I forgot how young he looked.I was blown away by the performance.

He was in pre-purple rain mode and was evolving. He still had a little of the punk rock ,of the past, and a little of the effeminate pimp swagger, but was starting to realize his superstar, hero to all stance. He was big and bigger ,but not yet stellar. It was in him, though and it was clear to see this man was a star.

I saw,for the first time, that COMPUTER BLUE and AUTOMATIC are cousins.Listen to them. They may be closer than that.He rocked and it was a flaming rock!I would have died if I had been there so close watching and listening!!This was one of the best shows I've ever heard or watched! He was spinning and strutting and dancing...the scream was there. He was so young and was a little tentative because I think it was a little scary what he saw...,but he knew he wanted it.He saw how big it was soon to become. He just had no idea that it would be bigger than even that.

Everything about this show was perfect!!The guitar playing...the funky bass...Bobby was working harder than we realized and he got off!!

This show ,clearly, should be cleaned up and released by Prince on dvd and w/ a soundboard cd.This was so much reock-n-roll history!!And it was funny to see P doin' his Mick Jagger imitations at certain points!!This is rock-n-roll!!

One of the best unofficial concerts ever. So much going on and so much music that was yet to become a hit in the next 10 months.

My favorite!!!

So this thread inspired me to dig out the cd and as I am listening to the rehearsal a question came to mind.

I'm quite sure that it is Matt doing the Popeye voice at the end of "Our House", but who is doing Olive Oyl? I assume it's either Wendy or Lisa, but whoever it was naile it pretty close.

I wouldn't have wanted him to wear anything else during the performance of that monster funk workout! What else would he have worn? What else would have been as funky and freaky??

And that was perfect because that was really all the Morris Day personae was and all that "sick" and funky attitude stuff he was doing back then for humor. He was transforming and all the influences were coming together and stretching out.(sortya' like when whatchamacallit was trying to get out of the nutty prof.)He had his punkish underwear on,the boots, the pimp hat,the "royal" tux jacket, and the cool rock star glasses on.Prince was becoming PRINCE.

Back in the day, you could get an early generation copy, but I would think that this would be harder to do now.

The video is "pro-shot", but not great. The audio on the boot CD's is taken from the later generation VHS.

Still, a must-have piece of historical magnetic tape.
