SOUL PSYCHEDELICIDE. Gooey Getts Dirty With The Mothership Version...

This little story is about my feelings towards Soul Psychedelicide, one of my favourite Prince jams ever.

Why? Easy. This song, at least the version I am talking about, to me captures Prince's funk vibe, hardly ever surfacing the way it should. So which version should that be? Not the jam with The Revolution. It is not the version with an off key Kim Basinger sounding as if she is somebody's alien stepmother. It is also not the very clean sounding version where Prince constantly addresses a certain Cash.
It is, of course, the version where Prince steps backward to let the George CLinton crew take over. The version I call the Mothership Version in a loving way.

I remember hearing it for the first time; that George Clinton intro. That relentless staccato beat. I never had heard of any Cloreen or Tricky. That spooky guitar riff, that would later pop up in Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic and The Max. I also think it the only song I could ever dig the way Prince incorporates other songtitles into a song. I love the way this song indeed seems to have the drive to keep going on and on and on and on...

First things first. Prince has roots in funk.Think Gettt Off and Sexy MF. Live it shows. Think Skin Tight. But on record it always seems the music never gets dirty enough. It seems a bit too produced. Then you hear this song and it makes sense. Here he uses the right nitty gritty sound we brothers and sisters of the P are used to; Funk Me Dirty indeed. Whip out that Funk Expresscard and make a withdrawal.
It's great to hear how Prince lets the funk crew take over and work that sucker to death. My personal highlight is when this woman's voice sings the part that soul goes on and on...I wish I knew her name. If I had been an even bigger Parliament fan I might even know. But I am just a moderate funk fan. My interest in someone's music is always lessened by my own impatience. People whoms music gets repetitive gets boring to me fast. Guess why I stuck around Prince's music so long.

Soul Psychedelicide. The song pumps. Breathes. It seems an animal that is hardly held back by Prince and the George Clinton Crew. It grinds. To me all the other versions do not. Let's pray Prince never releases it on any Crystal Ball or Profile album. Becuz for sure he'ld omit certain parts ("Aaaaw shit!") or edit it to fit into a certain jacket. Or, even worse; release the wrong version.

Wow. You're really given a lot of thought to this song. For some reason I always forget about it. Not cuz I don't like it though. You should send a copy of this to Prince so that he doesn't fuck it up when he finally does put it out. wink

I'm a big p-funk fan!It is the blueprint for funk and weird funkiness.James Brown is the bomb, but his funk is more conventional and less inventive.I'm a freak, baby so,I gotsta' have imagination involved.

THis is an excellent post.I feel you.I dig that tune myself. And I love "COOKIE JAR",too, which is a Parlet song P did.It sounds like the two songs could've been done in the same session."COOKIE JAR" is never far from my mind's jukebox.
