I feel the whole One Nite Alone piano album comes close. I love Joni Mitchell, hope to see her live some time... yes SIR!

I reckon Joni has been a consistent, long-term influence on P- it's hard therefore to pinpoint specific cases. That said, his recent explorations of jazz (or "black classical music" as Joni put it) echo her musical growth from "C&S" to... well, to "Travelogue". Brave, original, and immensely talented artists both- they share an equal contempt for crowd-pleasing and chart-courting. Hope she's loving her retirement: leave down your hopes of seeing her live- I know I have.

The whole Truth album 4 me echoes Joni. I've just recently discovered her (have Blue, Court and Spark and The Hissing of Summer Lawns). She takes some time 2 get into like Miles or Steely Dan but it's worth the effort. Can anyone recommend the next Joni album I should buy? I've heard the Mingus album is cool.

What about:
Dinner with Delores ? Oh, and try "Hejira" as ur next Joni album. P himself recommended it in one of those "bedisream" group emails back in '97 as good background leading up to Emancipation. "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"
"That's becuase we're soulless auttomatons"

hissing of summerlawns was very special to prince. I think he told joni something like when he was listening to it he could joni talk to him, because he felt it was so personal. it is one of my favourites... especially edith and the kingpin. yes SIR!

What about Courtin Time, reminds me a little of Twisted, though totally different lyrics.

Did they work on anything 2ghether? It would be intresting! prince offered joni a song called "emotional pump" back in '87, which i think he wrote for her, but she didn't use it. by the way, has anyone noticed the similarity between the "amen" at the end of the sacrifice of victor and the vocal arrangemnt in joni's "rainy night house"? u know p copped it! i love the album ladies of the canyon. it's strong on songs. one of my early faves. Now that is a good call. Never spotted it before. Rainy Night House is my favourite Joni track - just so beautiful

Twisted was a cover
Joni said Prince was a strange little duck but that she liked him. She told him that the song he wrote for her was a good song, probably a hit for someone else. Today I bought the Joni documentary Woman of Heart and Mind, and it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL. yes SIR!

This thread sooo makes me wanna go and listen to
The Last Time I Saw Richard and The Jungle Line Those are two of my fav Joni songs. Jungle Line has influenced a lot of the "experimental" sounds from the 1986-1987 period. I can hear some parts of songs like "others here with us" or "i wonder u" coming from that place. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
