What Does Prince Think Of These [COVERS]?

Many people covered his songs but does he think of the following:

I Feel 4 U-Chaka Khan
Do Me Baby-Mel'isa Morgan
How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore-Stephanie Mills
Purple Rain-Randy Jackson
The Beautiful Ones-Mariah Carey & Dru Hill
Kiss-Tom Jones

I do know that he wasn't too impressed by Ginuwine's version of "WDC". However, I heard that he liked Mariah's version of "TBO" his only complain was Dru Hill, he said that the song wasn't ment 2 be sung in a "duet" but he liked her version. I don't know about the rest,,,I sho wanna know about Tom's version of "Kiss" lol

I seem to remember when asked what he thought of Tom Jones version of Kiss, Prince replied " It ain't the song I wrote" - which I think means he didn't like it !!
I personally think Tom Jones' version is awful as most of his recordings are.

He must've dug Alicia's take on "HCYDCMA"- his ONA version draws heavily on the Neptunes' remix on her single. Not a patch on the gospel-cum-torch of the original. Or maybe he was bandwagonning(?)... again???

I liked Cyndi Lauper's version of "When You Were Mine" on her debut album. I think Mitch Ryder does a version of it too.

That's Randy CRAWFORD by the way...
and it's kinda cool - laid back, jaz club kinda vibe.
Let's face it - it's just one of those 'iconic' songs that just is damn near impossible 2 make your own (as is th nature of covering songs) but have 2 say, she does a good job. Besides, she has a voice 2 die 4.
I u REALLY wanna hear someone murder Purple Rain I did hear a blody awful BLUEGRASS version once!!! shake

Haven't heard the Darling Nikki Cover, but I LOVE De angelo's version of she's always in my hair.

There is a U2 version of the cross floating around, I dig that too.
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

i don't think he meant that as a dis...

Firstly no-one can cover / sample his songs without his approval on the final mix. so if he hated anything he wouldn't let it be released.

Secondly, i really can't see Prince having a problem with it. The changes and the whole arrangement has NOTHING to do with Tom Jones - it was Art Of Noise. They fliped it round and added 'The Peter Gun' Theme. They were part of a really cool and pioneering scene (from europe, i think) and they made the song into an Art Of Noise pice of work - Tom Jones was a guest vocalist.

I suppose like Prince said, when they finished with it it wasn't his song anymore... but i'd rather see Prince rip shit up while playing Just My Imagination, adding his brilliant guitar work - than him playing it do-wop as a homage to The Temptations.

IMO

Is this so? I never knew that. Isn't just paying royalties to the people who own the rights (wb) enough?

My fav cover of a prince song must be Pop life by Soulwax. A very original interpretation, really funky in a mechanical way. It's a b-side so it must have come out, but when the Soulwax people interviewed Prince for tmf (dutch music tv) Prince was very negative about covers and they didn't dare to tell him that they had also covered him. That's what made me doubt what NME said.

Yeah, Mitch Ryder did a cover of it. John Mellencamp was producing him at the time (as "The Little Bastard") and Mellencamp was way into Prince. He used to play Prince's Little Red Corvette over the PA's before his concerts when it came out, telling the audience how great it was.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Chaka Khan had a huge hit with her cover of "I Feel For You" in 1984,but that song had been covered several times before...

"I Feel For You" by the Pointer Sisters (1982)
"I Feel For You" by Rebbie Jackson (1984)
