The doors opened around 11PM. The Love4OneAnother room had a slightly different look with vines of flowers on the walls. The band's instruments were set up and music was playing. My friend remarked to me that it was "refreshing" to hear the DJ play tunes like Hypnoparadise and YShouldIdoThatWhenIcandoThis from the music club's second year. I thought so too. I hoped that Prince would come out and start a funky jam, right where he left off with these jams a few years ago.
Instead, Kirk announced that Prince would not be playing and the band Conversation Piece came out.
They played a mix of tunes with the Saxophone, guitar, piano, keyboard and vocals, each holding their own. At one point a young guy with a horn got up and added to this terrific mix. The first female vocalist sang some nice but very long and slow songs. The second singer had some spunky soul sounds that picked things up with a Marvin Gaye tune. There was a diverse mixture within this one band...they were like their name: a 'conversation piece' jamming with varied interesting components. Separately defining their individual sound, together they blended amazingly well. I noticed several former band member's and singers from previous Paisley performances in the room.
But it felt like a different type of crowd that nite. Maybe it was because Prince wasn't playing, but not many people were dancing. Prince stayed by the soundboard watching the band and videos with Mani.
It was good to see the doors open at Paisley Park and hear music coming from that good sound system again. Thanks Prince!
