Had it been released,*The Undertaker* would have put Prince back on top.

I was reading Funkaholic's thread on C&D...& yep it is a badass guitar/rock album, with some duds tho,in DigUBetterDead & IRockThereforeIAm. (it's funky but just isn't right...Rosie's voice sure helps tho)

But recently,i obtained a cd-r copy of the original *Undertaker* which was intended 4 release. (not the shitty sounding bootleg)
i can never stop playing this!
everyweek it ends up blasting from the PC or car speakers atleast 3-4 times.

The opening version of 'The Ride' isnt the best version of this song, the version from the Bagley's Warehouse 93 gig (Sacrifice video) is by far the most insane, off the chain, kickass version.
But it is cool if u like it laidback & like lots of wah-wah geetah.
'Poor Goo' is funky as hell, while being bluesy as a mofo!
it's just too cool.

NOW we start 2 get ugly!
PoorGoo's solo leads right in2 P's take of 'HonkyTonkWoman'.
a cut that blows me away!
now 4 the best part of the album:
'Bambi' headbang
the best version he has done in my opinion.(Tokyo 1990 shares this honour too i guess)
The guitar, especially at 3:00 will give anyone goosebumps.
the most rockingest part of the album by far.
this heads into a 47second interlude of 'Zanalee',til the band stops.
Prince says 2 the rest of the NewPowerTrio (MichaelBland & SonnyT) "here we go"
& then it's time for the title track.
very cool, the lyrics, the bassline keeps your body rocking back & forth...
now for an inspiring per4mance of 'Dolphin'.
i prefer this over the GoldExpereince version.
just doesn't sound as over-produced,as it is completely live with nothing else added.

I haven't seen *The Undertaker* video yet,i'm busting too tho!
Some people have said that the video isn't as awesome as just hearing the audio...that his playing looks uninspired & like he "isn't even trying".

i don't know, but i think if this was released,it would have given his career a jumpstart.
It would have come out of left-field for most critics & fans alike.
Rock & Blues fans, the same ones who booed Prince off stage 13years prior at the RollingStones gig, would sit up & take notice.Giving him a whole new audience, whilst giving his devoted fans something a lil bit different asfar as a official release goes.
(he could always rock out like this live)

definately in my top5 Prince albums, just a pity it wasn't put out there to the masses.

9.5/10 from me,since i prefer the Sacrifice version of TheRide.

discuss/props/slag-offs ? .. & ALSO.... ... which songs do u think could have been added to TheUndertaker?
perhaps make it 10 songs instead of 7.

I've got the video, and it has its moments, but it's not the best Prince album/video I've heard. It's still great to see just 3 musicians and no overdubbing/editing etc just making such a great sound.

Was the album intended to be just the audio from this video? or was it the same songs but different versions of them? Or was it a completely different tracklisting?

And also - I don't think anything could have saved Prince in the 90s. It was always inevitable. The music still rocked, but the popular market had just had enough of him. Oh well - that's their problem!

i'm not sure if it was only intended for audio or video.

the songs on the video version r the same, but i think perhaps TheRide is different slightly.

here is a webpage dedicated 2 TheUndertaker recording:

TRON

Temptation, Peach, Calhoun Square, The Question of U and Lovesexy would've made nice additions.

The way he dives right into Bambi is amazing but the rest isn't really his best performance of the song, IMO.
I think the voice doesn't quite sound right and I don't really like the sound of the guitar, sounds strange at times.
I think the whole session is overrated sometimes.

joshy,i'm glad U brought up the cd. i don't have it-but i
do have the video. its pretty good...but i think U have to
be a serious music fan to dig it. me...i'm serious so i
like it.
its really no story to it(although p has a girl actress
wander into the jam and sit there high as a kite checking
him sonny & micheal b out...)

its just p 7 da boys kicking ass.

to me he don't look bored just playing his shit with no
acknowledgement of the camera.
(meaning he's acting like he would if he was just jamming
with no crowd around)

again...if you ain't into the MUSIC...and seeing p not
dancing and shit-U would find this video dull.

you're right. this is GOOD stuff.

bambi is...man.
honky tonk woman's cool too.

if he every does a power trio thang again i'd love to see
him try it with rhonda & sheila e.

maybe its just me but i miss sonny t. the boy was BAD.
he had a nice vibe with p. i guess its cuz they went back
so far as teens.

I have a CDR of The Undertaker. It should have been but it's not really that much better than "Chaos & Disorder" (which is pretty damn good). Had he released it TODAY, it would have made more impact than NEWS, which I betcha gets pretty much ignored by the general public when it drops.

Buy 'The Sacrifice Of Victor' video. That's where you'll find the Bagleys aftershow.

Maybe, but not as much as "The Truth" CD.

If he would have released this is a single CD, backed with some promotion and a video, this would have definately put Prince back in the public eye. I think it would have put him back on top.

I have the japansese laserdisc official release of THe Undertaker. It is direct form DAT and sounds great. The version of Bambi is the prototype for Prince guitar chops
