Over: SOTT - great, but not THAT far ahead of everything else Mr P has done.

Under: Grafitti Bridge. There are some CLASSIC songs on there (Still will stand all time, joy in repetition, tick tick bang). But then there are some pretty average ones...

I also think some of the early stuff is over-rated - but then I jumped on board the P bandwagon fairly late - in the early 90s.

The Come Album was very under-rated.

And I don't see the point in rating any album after Come, since he fell deeper and deeper underground from the Pop Industry. Not too many people even know he put out an album after that era.

Over - Purple Rain
Under - Exodus, Lovesexy

I agree that come is hugely under-rated.

Can someone clear things up for me...Moonbeam Levels...is that No Light In A Large Room? If so, then I think that this is a massively under-rated tune...but it's a bootleg so really doesn't count does it?

Overrated- The gold experience, Lovesexy, Around the world in a day.

Yes those albums do have some killer tracks, it's just not all of that tome at all.

Underrated- Controversy, Come, and the song 3 chains o' gold!

Also shame on the person who said 1999 was overrated for not having enough variety. That is the holy grail to most P fans.

Seriously, aside from 1999 being the explosion in coming out when it did, why is it "the holy grail"?

I like it and play it a lot, but, IMHO,it's got flaws that are overlooked, although the same flaws are criticized on other albums. For example:

Delerious is a great song but not groundbreaking after songs on DM and Controversy;

the funk beat is similar in many of the songs;

the drumming is not that impressive;

some of the songs are simply too long (Prince as Jerry Garcia? oh nooo!);

Free is a yawnfest (for me, at least);

and, only a Frenchman would top off a fine meal with a big chunk of cheese like International Lover

I'm not being a prick, just looking for an answer as one who wasn't there at it's birth. Help me out here.

No. Moonbeam Levels is sometimes called "A Better Place To Die."

Overrated song: Moonbeam Levels

I love this song, really I do. But I really think that if it had been released as an album track, people would not sweat it the way they do. It's definitely a good song, but I think its bootleg status makes it more appealing to many Orgers.

no no no!

Defenitly the most under-rated Prince-album is:

For You

Cuz "In Love", "Crazy You" "Just as long.." and most of all "My love is forever" are very beautiful songs and they still grow on me after all those years. "My love is forever" makes Micheal Jackson duck

The Gold Experience is the best "recorded" album since the beatles "White". If you listen to the songs, they all tell a chapter in a great story. Stand back and listen to 'I hate U', the organs in the background, the painful drums, man, it's a masterpiece at worst. At best it's a funky ode to a chick who wronged him. Dig the crazy guitar solo at the end.

tough question. the old boy has made SOooo many albums.

and my opinion changes the more i play various albums:

ok the underrated albums (i'll name these 3 in order)
1.prince's second album: even though he claims it was him
making a commerical record to get the BIg wigs at WB off
his back (for over budgeting on "for you") this old
school dude really freaks out when i pull this out to play
from time to time)

p as smokey robinson (vocally anyway) with his own slightly
disco,rock orientated,ballady,soul style in da mix...
the outsatnding cuts to me:bambi,wanna be your lover...just
for the groove and the last part (digs that keyboard playing) sexy dancer ...why you wanna treat me so bad...
before i played guitar i used to do "air guitar like crazy on with him and dez on the solos like a motha

still waiting & close & slow (just cuz its so subtle and
i sing the hell outta it!)

2.dirty mind...i know critics hail it...but really its
better than U think.punk-funk never sounded this good
(sorry rick james!)
3.gold experience

overrated:
purple rain ;its not a bad album..its just p by the numbers.
if U didn't see the movie would these tunes still make U
make u gO CRAZY ? (There's great songs here :computer blue,
let's go crazy & beautiful ones)
i just think ole boy was trying to make radio friendly songs...in other words its p being commercial (like mj!)

lovesexy: i agree with what U peeps say about this one

emancipation: there's some cool tunes here but out of
50 cuts...no way is this worth the money i spent on it!

What is the matter with y'all? Lovesexy overrated? Are we engaging in a little revisionist history here? That LP was slammin'. Period. The critics' received it lukewarmly at best. It is not one of P's better sellers, but it is more emotionally affecting and coherent than a lot of the allegedly "underrated" albums (albeit very good albums) y'all have listed.

As P said, you either had a mindblowing experience or you didn't. I did. And I gotta tell the org -- I just can't keep it 2 m'self!
