The quality of the Small CLub recording alone makes it beter in my opinion. Add on the performances of Housequake, Just My Imagination, and People Without and Small Club blows every Prince bootleg in history out of the water.
When I lived in LA and would prowl the streets of Holllywood in the middle of the night, ood ball radio stations would play this bootleg openly. That is how legendary it is.

This is difficult to pick wich one
is "better". Small club IS a board mix, but an uneven mix at that. New morning is an audience tape, so the SQ is lower, but there are some real loose and free flowing groves here like the second song. Great jams that you can tell were made up on the spot and lots of cool soloing from around the band. The groovy-Blues, but soulful "Was it my face?" Obviously improvized. The slammin' Housequake/Mutiny/Beautiful Night. The catchy uptempo Red House is no slouch and there is even a great Just My Imagination. Small Club has the AMAZING opening instrumental jam, the stunning Just My Imagination, & the KILLER rocking jam of RaveU2TJF as well as other great material. The ease on the ears because of the soundboard quality of the recording can not be denied, but in my opinion, I think that Prince & the band were a little more on for the New Morning show than on the Small Club show. I also think that the Small Club version of People Without is overrated. To me, it sounds like Prince wants to say something here and has a few ideas, but it just hasn't come together yet and he is kind of fumbling around a little with it. Which is GREAT to get to hear in an aftershow performance, but I guess I just don't enjoy it in this peticular case. I don't think he quite pulled it off. Like the DMSR. He just doesn't quite hit it. I also really love the 1987 Vieanna Club U4 aftershow. Now that shit is l o o s e and f u n k y!! "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

Why does "People Without" get so much praise? I mean, it has some decent lyrics, but the music is so repetitive. Even for something that may have been improvised on the spot, Prince has done much better with other improvised jams in other aftershows.

Personally I LOVE Small Club but I understand the debate, and it's a debate which will go on and on. I think part of Small Clubs ongoing appeal is that it came out at a time when most Prince bootlegs sounded like shit. 2 finally hear such a great show (and I'm sorry naysayers it IS a great show!!) in such great sound quality blew a lot of people away (myself included).
I think now people come 2 that recording expecting miracles and are understandebly dissapointed. The first time I heard 'What's Goin On' I felt the same. Small Club remains a recording every Prince fan must hear.Nuff Said.
