Here's the poem from the Lovesexy tour programme in full;

Time upon a once there was a boy named Camille
Now this boy named Camille didn't know how 2 feel
Sometimes he was lonely, sometimes he was sad
but most times he just took 4 granted
all the nice things that he had

Some people said they loved him,
but Camille said "Contempt!
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall,
love is no good unless it's felt by all".

So naive & terrifically in need,
Camille started looking 4 answers.
His paintbrush the questions, his canvas the arena,
Camille set out 2 silence his critics.
"No longer daring" - his enemies laughed
"No longer glam, his funk is half-assed...
one leg is much shorter than the other one is weak.
His strokes are tepid, his colors are meek."

So Camille found a new color.
The color was black: strongest hue of them all.
He painted a picture called Le Grind - hittin' so tall.
And then Cindy C - THE vogue fantasy.
Horns & vocals 2 die 4. Lollipops - in yours!
Stroke after stroke callin' all others a joke.
Superfunkycalifragisexi

Camille rocked hard in a funky place
Stuck his long funk in competition's face
Tuesday came. Blue tuesday.
His canvas full and lying on the table
Camille mustered all the hate he was able.
Hate 4 the ones who ever doubted his game.
Hate 4 the ones who ever doubted his name.
"Tis nobody funkier - let the Black Album fly"

Spooky Electric was talking,
Camille started 2 cry.
Tricked. A fool he had been.
In his lowest utmostest.
He had allowed the dark side of him
2 create something evil.
2 Nigs United 4 West Compton.
Camille & his ego. Bob George. Why?
Spooky Electric must die.
Die in the hearts of all who want love.
Die in the hearts of men who want change.
Die in the bodies of women who want babies
that will grow up with a New Power Soul.

Love Life, Lovesexy -
the feeling u get when u fall in love,
not with a girl or boy but with the heavens above
Lovesexy - endorphin.
Camille figured out what 2 feel.
Glam Slam Escape - the Sexuality Real.
Tonight we make love with only words. Girls first.
This feeling's so good in every single way.
God is alive!
Let him touch u and he will quench every thirst.
Let him touch u and an aura of peace will adorn u.
God is alive!
Let him touch u and your own Lovesexy will be born.
Let him touch u, let him touch u and Heaven is yours.
Welcome 2 the New Power Generation.

There are so many levels to both of these albums, the funk is deep, layered and sexy. Ironically, I don't find the funk as 'black' on The Black Album, as I do on Camille. Actually, I don't think there is a Prince album as funky as Camille. Maybe, that's why we miss him. Anyway, which do you think assembles as the most cohesive funk album by Prince?

Camille Album

Anji, did this album come as close as a catalog number to being released by Prince? I don't recall actually hearing about the Camille album back in the day... I just know that I began hearing about the "Camille" character after the release of SOTT. I posted the above pix for reference.

I'll refer you to Boris on that one, kmc. lol

The Camille album WAS given a WB catalogue number
in November 1986 (though I've never heard what that
number was though).

It was pencilled into Warner's schedule for a
January 1987 release. They even made a test pressing
for a projected single from the album: Shockadelica
backed with Housequake.

The artwork for the album has never surfaced (if it
was even ever completed). All we know is that it
would have featured a crude drawing of a stick-man,
with 'X's for eyes, representing 'Camille'.

These are lyrics to a poem (and possibly a song)
that were supposed to be read by Cat's character in
the original 1987 version of Graffiti Bridge. In
this, Prince's character was called 'Camille Blue'.

The Camille Album is by far the funkiest Prince album there is released or not. Each song hangs so tight and the Linn drum is programmed with that hard beat in every song. It also has that eerie organ in all the songs. I made myself a copy of the album along with all the other songs attributed to Camille. When ever I play it people always ask me when did this Prince album come out and I tell them it was only sent to those who know Prince's true funk. They get all pissed, but the looks on their faces when they hear the funk is priceless. The Black Album is strong, but it can't hang with Camille. That whole persona and time era is one that Prince missed out on by not releasing Camille. It would have made that 1986-87 time era even more legendary.

Camille wins easily
It is more balanced as an album and every song works, i especially like those dirty funkrock songs rotf and rhiafp.

only good love feels a bit like a filler..

the Black album is not as coherent and especially side one seems to lack focus. side two is very good tho'
I feel pretty, that's enough

We're talking about the actual 'Camille' album
Not tracks credited to Camille.

The Camille album was completed in early November
1986. The idea was that the album would be
released under the name 'Camille', and no-one
would realise it was actually Prince until news
spread via word of mouth and rumor. It even got
as far as being given a catalogue number and
release date by Warners. But soon after completing
it Prince decided to expand it into a triple
album called Crystal Ball, which would also
include non-camille material.

The original Camille album only included the
following tracks (as has already been stated):

side 1:
1. Rebirth Of The Flesh
2. Housequake
3. Strange Relationship
4. Feel U Up
side 2
1. Shockadelica
2. Good Love
3. If I Was Your Girlfriend
4. Rockhard In A Funky Place

U Got The Look wasn't recorded until the 21st of
December '86. Hot Thing isn't a 'Camille' track,
it was recorded shortly after Dream Factory was
shelved in August '86. Scarlet Pussy is actually
a track originally intended for Sheila E's
uncompleted 4th Paisley Park album, and was
recorded in January '88.

Harle, you are missing all of that funk. Camille is funk. Having said that, this thread had definitely renewed my appreciation of The Black Album. Damn, I can't believe I said that album sounded white yesterday. I mean, what the fuck?! I love the spoken intro on Le Grind where he actually introduces the original concept of the album, The Funk Bible, uh!

There were no other official alternate tracklistings
for the Black Album. The album was assembled very
quickly during October '87 when Prince was actually
working on the original version of the Graffiti
Bridge movie and the accompanying album. He dropped
the title 'The Funk Bible' when he hit upon the
idea of releasing the album in a completely black
sleeve with no artist listing.

The album is mainly made up of tracks that Prince
recorded especially to play at Sheila E's birthday
party on the 11th December '86. The newest track
was 'When 2 R In Love', which was recorded as he was
assembling the the album. Other tracks recorded at
this time were 'U' and 'I Guess I'm Crazy', as well
as several tracks intended for Graffiti Bridge.

Boris, do you know what changes the Graffiti Bridge album went through from original conception to the finished article? I find it a wonderful collection of defiantly hopeful songs. As many have pointed it, it's almost like an excellent bootleg compilation of songs that fell through the cracks. Still feels like a classic album, nonetheless.

Another great thread, Anji. :applause:

I think Camille has that edge of funk over The Black Album, for some reason. It's quirkier and more playful, although The Black Album is more subversive. Both are funk masterpieces, but you know that I think 1999 takes the cake.

I have to agree with Ted...

the funkiest album by Prince isn't either of those (even though they are fonky).

The funkiest album by Prince is EXODUS. It is dripping with George Clinton type grooves.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/
