The meaning behind N.E.W.S.

I'll accept any insults at stating the obvious, but honestly I haven't heard anybody say this on the org.

Shit, this could be more embarrasing than announcing the new Prince MPLS Genius CD... I'll take the risk.

XPectation announced 'New Directions' by Prince.

N.E.W.S. is an acronym for North, South, East and West (yes, I know that we all know that), all of which are directions. Hence, that's what the album title and the song titles are all about.

I'll wait for nasty sarcastic poisonous insults... but maybe, just maybe this isn't the most obvious point that everybody on the org but me are continually talking about. Am I paranoid?

Cool theory -- especially when you consider that Prince has often did albums in "twos."

Sorry, I wasn't trying to bring the two albums together, I was just making a statement about Prince's current style, from Xpectation and including N.E.W.S. I only stated Xpectation because that's where I saw Prince label it 'new directions'... I assume that N.E.W.S. being instrumental and experimental also puts it in the 'new directions' basket...

You're right though, he does have pairs of albums, that could be the Gemini in him, and perhaps Prince will return to his more typical style of music after N.E.W.S.?

Good question. Any ideas? He has four new songs and they're all directions, so that gives us 'new directions'. Maybe that's stretching it, but it doesn't seem a far fetched idea that N, E, W and S are all directions in his new directions.

north, east, south and west have been terms for directions for centuries. Just because Prince uses them in a song title it is new directions?

I think new directions in music was the official sub-title of Xpectation. So separating "new directions" from "in music" is not what was intended imho.

It is all just bla bla, and because Prince had enough of comments on his lyrics - or finally realized he has had nothing worthwhile to say in the last decade - he decided to just "shut up and play his guitar".

Or maybe, just maybe...the "New Directions In Music" banner is describing a "series" in which P strays from the norm and ventures outside of what is "xpected"...get it???

I mean, as with the Madhouse projects...I think P likes to create pieces that don't always reconcile his past musical ventures (funk and R&B)...pieces which allow him to kind of step outside himself and be recognized as someone who could create as a TRUE musician...not a "Pop" artist.

So, in my opinion, the "New Directions" title simply means that the works of both "Xpectation" and "NEWS" are "new directions" in terms of the icon that is PRINCE...not necessarily new in terms of the music itself.

I agree with you entirely. But I also think he's playing on the 'new directions' thing by naming his songs with the directions of a compass...

Maybe so, but I still think that may be a little thin, considering he used the same "New Directions In Music" banner under the "Xpectation" project. I don't necessarily think it coincides with the "N.E.W.S." theme in terms of direction. I firmly believe it's an affirmation regarding what we want versus what we need. Doesn't that sound familiar??? Well, it should...considering he practically warned us of this transformation in "Jukebox w/a Heartbeat".

I think what he feels is that we have been flooded with music that the powers-that-be think we should be celebrating instead of celebrating the music that artists actually create and share w/the masses.

I think the trip began w/Madhouse, and continues today with "Xpectation", "CNOTE", and now "N.E.W.S." It's kind of like a rebirth of our musical senses...like flushing our system of the Brittany Spears's of the industry. Making us better appreciate music as it was intended...by musicians instead of by good producers. Get it??

I liken Prince to someone like Roy Jones Jr. (I'm a boxing fan...I can't help it). Definetely under-appreciated, yet arguably one of the greatest of all time. A musician or entertainer like P doesn't come around all that often. I for one, have and will continue to stay on the train for as long as it's running.

Does it have to have a meaning?
Just a few long instrumentals, I just hope he gets it out of his system and moves on quickly

MY TWO CENTS twocents

Miles Davis used the term "Directions in Music by Miles Davis" for many of his albums from 1967-72. I always thought it was reference to that. (That was Miles's most experimental period by the way).
