Isn't technology grand? Anytime I feel I miss the way Prince used to be, I just pop in something and he's right there, dancing, singing, cursing, doing the splits, it is then that I remember why I love him. So he's changed a little, (ok alot), hopefully we all have, it's been 25 years. How many friendships do you have that have lasted that long?

I will always hold dear the many, many good times he has given me. I can't in good conscience ask for anything more than that.

New songs on the radio nod

But, then again, I barely listen to the radio and, actually the first time i heard anything from TRC was the title track on the radio (it was only available thru the site at the time), and had the same old "blow-my-mind-call-up-friends-to-listen feeling, so I guess I don't ahve much 2 bitch about - not like the rest of u.

Things I miss...

***the bold, sexy lyrics---the other day,I took out the '1999' CD and I can't tell you how great it was to hear the old, outrageous, nasty, rebellious Prince again! Yeah,I know people change and we all gotta move on,but I still miss this era tremendously.Who else gets teary-eyed when they put on something like "Automatic"?

***proper promotion/marketing---I miss the Warner years, when a new album came out every year.Remember in the 80s when, beginning with 'Purple Rain',we got a new album EVERY SPRING? That was amazing! But we got much more than just the album...we got the singles, with rare B-sides,the 12" versions, the videos, etc.

I miss hearing a Prince song for the first time on radio. Back then, I usually learned of a new song when I heard it on radio. That was exciting.

Man,those were the days, weren't they? smile

I remember listening to the radio, just waiting to hear the new Prince song. The DJ would say "Okay, folks,we have a world exclusive for you,the new Prince single!!" and I would be going out of mind...lol...I was at school one day in February 1986,with my WalkMan on during the lunch break, and I heard "Kiss" for the first time.I went around telling everybody about it.We all couldn't WAIT to get home, request it,tape it and play it over and over and over...lol...

David, "You took the words right out of my mouth"!
I remember getting up at 7am to go down and wait at the record store opening at 9am. Be the first one to buy the new Prince album. Lock myself in my room (I'd skip school that day.) and just soak it all in.

I've been reading comments like this all the time on the org. I understand about the sex talk, that was quite amusing sometimes, but I don't understand about the swearing.

I mean, what is so cool about swearing? It's not that I'm against it, but I just don't get it why someone would miss the swearing.

Can anyone explain?

I miss his drive.

He had a purpose and an intensity that compelled you to listen and it seemed that he was compelled to make this music this way and if you didn't like it, you could just kiss his ass 'cause he knew he was too cool!

He followed his muse without question and each note, each word seemed inevitable. He seemed to stand behind his work, not apologizing for anything.

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy his recent output and there are still flashes of the brilliance that shoot out every now and then. But his music had an honesty that was arresting, wrenching and fascinating to watch. He channeled his muse and lived by the truth of it. It's almost as if the more he has searched for "the truth", the further he has moved from it.

There is now an air of self-censorship that I find sad. It could be caused by many things. Maybe it's due to watching record after record dive on the charts. Maybe it's the reality of the shift in the industry away from musicianship and showmanship toward prefab trendiness. Maybe it's a stricter religious code. Maybe I'm trippin'. But I truly miss the balls-out, audacious Prince who amazed on every level.

I do miss the dancing at the gigs. Time gets us all though. Let's face it - Prince matures like any other human. He moves on in life. He is not 21 anymore - mentally or physically. Thus we will miss some of the splits, jumping off speakers and pianos, profanity,m the scantily clad babes, some of the sex, etc. However, the work is as good as its ever been. He is stretching out and reaching new levels that he could not have when he was younger and on top pf the charts. We have the time tested classics with the new inspired work of a wiser and more learned musical genius. The retrospective of his career is breathtaking - not just for longevity but for the consistent accomplishment and daring innovation.

My first inclination is not to use the word "miss". When you are young, you never think that you will get old. But if you are fortnate, that day will come. The grace and style with which you meet it makes the difference. From the modest beginnings of For You through the dazzling heights of Purple Rain to the mastery of The Rainbow Children, the ride has been like no other that I can recall. I dont look back with any despair - the best is today and it is only getting better.
Truly.

Could miss his dancing for sure, but hey as others have said time is passing by...

What I miss most is when youc ould felt that Prince was so much ahead of his time, when he REALLY put out something that floored you and had never been heard before (take Kiss for instance: this song is so original!)

These days, even though some things he puts out are great (TRC), I can't help but thinking that he is no longer defining the future course of music. He is really an old artist, putting out great things at times because he is so talented, but lagging behind quite a few new artists

LoveMachine, ditto. I could have wrote your post on the jams at PP. My feelings exactly. I remember walking out of there the first time I went to PP and the sun coming up after such a great experience. I still hope for these days to return.

I guess I miss just about everything that stopped when he became a JW. I miss his voice. Maybe he doesn't have one anymore. that would be the day.
