Who would admit to liking show tunes, if Prince composed a Broadway musical? So he's done pop, r&b, dance, jazz, gospel, instrumental fusion and the ballet and everyone is still on his jock. So next, he composes a musical love/funk story (not about him) more like Aida, for Broadway, music and lyrics. Would the Pied Piper be able to make all of his rats follow? We went to the ballet, remember. ---------------------------------

He already tried that with Graffiti Bridge -- a song that appears to be universally despised -- so I don't think folks would line up.
Then again, there's always at least one in the crowd! I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I think if Prince tried writing the libretto to a musical, I would especially hate show tunes...unless the music were like the songs he wrote for "Say Anything", which I thought were actually pretty darn good. I can't help but think we'd get stuck with music on par with, say, "Kamasutra" (eek).
I like Hedwig and Rocky Horror, though - does that make me a showtune queen?

Wasnt "Strays of the World" intended for a broadway show? Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

A lot of jazz standards are 'show tunes' and I like them. I HATE most musicals though. I sit there thinking 'stop fucking singing and get on with the story!'

i think it would be awful at this stage in his career. maybe in the 80s but certainly not now.

I don't think Prince would be able to collaborate with other artists the way musical theatre requires. You saw with "Graffiti Bridge" and "Under the Cherry Moon," the man thinks he can do it all.

That's where you're wrong, SP. He's a different person now. In fact, Prince and I are collaborating on a Broadway musical project this year and he's been very open to others' ideas and very cooperative. In fact, the only thing he's been his old self about is the daily threat that he'll enforce the clause in the contract that allows him to pull out of the project if any word about his involvement leaks out in advance of the premiere later this . . . . Uh-oh.
