eric leeds himself said that prince just told them what key they would play in, and they just played. so it is improvised. it was one session. now, i don't know what went on beyond that...but he was very clear on that.[/quote]

Of that I have no doubt. Eric I believe, was improvising..but Prince is such a perfectionist and there is EDITS, OVERDUBS all over the record, you do here them right? So, I doubt Prince is improvising at all on there. Thats why they rehearse. He obviously had an idea what he wanted to play before he played it. Eric sounds a bit more natural, listen.

Thats the only part I actually like in all three songs. I wish he would have developed that part much more.

Wow...Prince "Fans" are really split at the moment!

You can tell the people who like the N.E.W.S. tracks listen to Miles and Weather Report and the like(I'm listening to Miles' Live at the Filmore West right now!) cos they are the only people who "get it".

"Get What?" I hear the others say...well, the fact that it is about musicians playing and not about a 3 minute pop song. This is what MUSICIANS do. Full stop. They play to express themselves and release energy. Prince, like Coltrane, needs to play... they can't just wait until everything is "perfect" in their heads before recording music... that would defeat the object of such sessions.

Jazz Fusion(for want of a better phrase or title) has always had it's negative critics. Yes it can seem pompous and too freeform. But the improvisation always brings out great moments. You may have to sit through, say, 5 minutes of a track without much drive before the rhythm section hits a lick and takes the track into interesting directions but this is what I love about music. It does not have to be immeadiate and in your face. Music is organic and should be treated as such and left to grow through a natural and unforced process.

Wake up people...

Prince the Pop Star = Dead

Prince the MUSICIAN = Alive and kicking

Keep rocking what YOU feel, P!

PS. Purple Rain sucks major arse... Now try getting me to listen to that one again!

Ok I was with you all the way up until the last statement, but I won't hold it against you. Your other points were right on the money!

Most of these folks ar looking for something to shake their asses to and they are not finding that with Prince anymore and it is disheartening for them. Oh well. I am a definately a jazz lover. I get it, love it, and can't wait to hear all of it!

As improvised jams...they are good. Not increadible, not earth-shattering or revalatory - JUST 'good'. 1st time Ive ever wondered why he's decided 2 release such a thing as an official release.

Just 'good' hasnt ever been a valid enough reason 2 warrant an official release before. Normally he's such a stickler 4 quality control. It smacks of yet another wasted opportunity. What's up P? Now you're '#1 at the bank' mean u aint hungry 4 it anymore?

Personally, I feel it falls short on 2 points (although it doesnt neccesarily fail):

1) being Jazz-fusion/experimental/ambient/whatever - he really should have taken the opportunity 2 REALLY push the boat out on it, it kinda comes across as meandering (and not in the good, jazz-noodling sense) In a word, directionless.
2) Talking of directions - the album seemingly could have had one, but this 2 seems wasted. It would have been nice 4 P 2 have knocked our socks off by utilising instrumentation from the 4 corners of the globe and - the clip of East seemed 2 promise this (of the four trax, this is the one that really does anything 4 me).
Some may say that would be 2 predictable, but look at what we're left with:
SONIC WALLPAPER* Wooohhh... bored

2 sum-up: It's 'ok', but...so what? shrug

MY twocents

*and it's flock wallpaper at that! lol

No, I think it sucks as well. I think people need to realize that for now the Pop star Prince is on a vacation.

At 45 years old it is time for Prince the musician to shine a little bit and leave the pop music to the 12 year olds.

He put out a pop record call RAVE it did not do well. So why not try something else for a while.

I think we can expect Prince to do this in the remainder of his career:

Put out a big album (real songs, a pop album, whatever you want to call it) once every two or three years... and a lot of experimental releases in between that time, be it instrumental albums or concert DVDs or whatever. But I imagine he has been working on his next big Prince project to follow up The Rainbow Children for some time now, and wants to put a lot of effort into it before it gets released. I mean, it's going to be hard to follow up on a monster like TRC.

I don't know, I really appreciate the experimentation and stretching out of a project like NEWS. I enjoy hearing it. But it's true, if I had to choose between this and a new proper Prince album of songs, I'd go for the proper album.

If I can't get that though, I'll take whatever he has to give, if he believes in his project, it's not going to be complete crap. You know Prince, he's not going to put out something he doesn't deem worthy unless he's trying to get out of a contract!
